Who can name me the tiny ten of southern Africa? The big five are easy and I have all of them if you count the hippo instead of the rhino.
I have most of the tiny ten, eight I believe but I can't for the life of me think of all 10. Who can help me out here, I have tried searching them to no avail, due to my excellent computer skills I'm sure.
I have the red duiker, the blue duiker, the common/gray duiker, the suni, the oribi, the steinbuck, the klipspringer. I do not have the dik dik or the grysbok and I can not remember the tenth.

I wouldn't have a clue but I Googled and found this:

Tiny Ten Species
• Damara Dik-Dik
• Blue Duiker
• Common Duiker (also called Gray Duiker or Bush Duiker)
• Red Forest Duiker (also called Red Duiker, Natal Duiker or Natal Red Duiker)
• Cape Grysbok (also called Southern Grysbok)
• Sharp's Grysbok (also called Northern Grysbok)
• Klipspringer
• Oribi
• Steenbok (also known as Steinbuck or Steinbok)
• Suni

Is that what you were looking for?

Well hell for no other reason than I can, I'll post pics of the seven of the ten that I have................

This is my red duiker and a good one he is too..........

This is my suni.......

This is my oribi...........

This is my klipspringer..........

This is my steenbok...........

This is my gray or common duiker..............

and this is my blue duiker...........

The suni, red duiker and blue duiker are most commonly hunted with a 12 ga shotgun. They inhabit very thick forest areas and can be a proper b!tch to shoot. The only one I shotgunned was the blue, they come to a call and usually on the run so it is a fast paced game. I actually shot three, because I'm pretty good with a shotgun and removed the first two's heads, or a large portion there of. However we needed the meat and they were very good eating.

The rest were taken with a 300 Win Mag for the early photos of a younger me and the later were all with a 300 Wby......it is some tough on them little guys, life mounts not a possibility. Gotta keep the hits back, way back......hams are a perfect shot, still instant dead, the shock to these little animals is horrific.
The locals like to hunt these little guys with either the shotgun or a 22, the new 17 rimfire offerings would be outstanding for these 10-20 lb animals.

I never could understand the fascination of people who fly all the way to Africa and then #### around chasing these little guys. Then, near the end of my Botswana trip, my PH convinced my to try to get a Common Duiker. I had taken everything I was interested in...I had spent a day wingshooting (at which I totally suck, but I still enjoyed it)...so I figured, "What the heck? Let's try it." I told him I wanted to use my rifle, rather than a shotgun...he just smiled.

We hiked around for two days, saw lots of duikers (usually racing away at Mach 3 through dense brush), stalked a couple, blew a few stalks (okay...blew pretty much all of them!), crawled like beetles, sweated like pigs, laughed like lunatics, and I attempted a couple of running shots. No luck, not even close. No joy on duikers...but that was absolutely some of the most enjoyable, most challenging, most fun hunting I have ever experienced. If I ever make it back to Africa, and if I have any time left after the main goal is accomplished, I'm gonna chase one of those little runts again until I get one...and, dammit, I'm going to use my rifle! :)

By the way, c-fbmi...what about the Royal Antelope? Is that considered one of the tiny ten? I saw a show recently where Shockey was hunting one, in the jungle at night. Looked intense. Very interesting. Is that on your list?

Saw that Shockey episode as well jj .....nope it is not one of THE tiny ten of southern Africa, it's up north of the equator so it can't count. I took 2 other duikers that don't qualify for the tiny ten either. Not sure if I'll ever feel a need to chase that one, there is nothing else to hunt in that country and to spend that much money for a little runt thing like that just doesn't add up in my mind.
It has been said that one will spend 4 times as many days hunting and more money, with many more disappointments, trying to collect the tiny ten than the big five...........I'm convinced !! Just 3 more to go............the weather messed up my southern grysbok last time in SA .......will have to see what the future holds.

Aaah...got it. I didn't realize they were just a southern Africa thing. Makes sense. When you consider the number of huntable antelope species in Africa, I'll bet there's dozens of assorted little guys scattered over the continent.

Whatever you do, don't ever stop to calculate what they cost on a per-pound basis! :)
