A Ruffed only needs a few pellets to put it on the ground, either dead or fluttering. A sharptail is very different. I've knocked them out of the air with #6s, watched them them bounce a few feet in the air, and then see them run off like a rabbit. Ruffies I'll use #7.5 or #8 with light loads and very open chokes. Sharptail, #6 or #7.5 and IC/Mod depending on their flushing distances.
I'm with Grouse Man. Ruffies aren't that tough if you get any amount of shot on them. For my double 12 I've used AA light target loads (#8's) for years with great success. My 12 is choked IC and Mod but I regularly wished for more open chokes. I am now using an OU 20 with Cyl and Skeet 1 with 7/8 oz and am finding it to be ideal for me. Sharptail and Huns are quite a bit tougher and once past the early season are generally shot at somewhat longer ranges. I have begun using 7 1/2 Skeet 1 for my first barrel and 6 IC for my second. With a single barrel IC and a load of #6's would be my first choice. Good luck and good hunting.
