Are there secrets like in the accelerated PAL approval thread, for doing a private transfer? Would it help if I hammer away at the CFO to get it done and not wait for them to get around to it?

It helps if both parties are quick to contact the CFC to complete their end of the transfer. If the buyer is local to their CFO's office, drop in for a visit. Always works for me :D.
It also depends on which province you are in, the workload in the CFO's office, other factors, etc. Some people's transfers takes weeks, others happen same day.

Sadly, it's the Ontario CFO for me. Although, judging by some recent feedback, some people were able to get their transfers approved quickly here. I wonder if anyone knows the factors affecting this. Is it a matter of being the squeaky wheel getting the grease, ie calling and asking about the status gets you processed "while we're at it"...?

I called the CFO the other day, just told me to keep waiting, then I called today and he approved it over the phone. guess it really depends who picks up the phone. I'd say call a couple times.

Heh, nice, that's what I'm hoping for. Finished my CFC call, will start bugging the CFO in a day or two :p

Once the CFO approves, can the seller ship right away or do we need any paperwork? If so, maybe I could get them to fax it to me?

Actually, which CFO does the approving? The buyer's or the seller's?

And when the approval happens, do they seriously mail a letter or would they call to inform of the approval?

It goes through the buyers CFO I believe.

And no they will not call you to notify you of the transfer, thats why I suggest you call them frequently, otherwise you will be waiting for stupid letter mail on top of it all.

This is up to the seller I guess. They are allowed to ship right after the transfer is approved, however some may not feel comfortable doing so

It goes through the buyers CFO and after waiting a couple of days, calling is a good idea, it does speed things up even if you have to wait on hold 30 mins to get through. Seller can ship soon as transfer is complete. Waiting for the paperwork is bull#### and not necessary, it makes the buyer have to wait even longer.

Called the CFO, 24 hrs later, and she says it's already assigned to an officer and will be approved today. She said they're pretty much all caught up.

I think I'm going to get off the Ontario hate bandwagon, these folks have been nothing but great to me. Got my PAL in a little over the mandatory waiting period, 24hr restricted transfer, ultra polite and helpful on the phone... can't really ask for much more.

EDIT: just as I posted this, got a call from the woman I spoke with (I didn't leave my number), she said I just wanted to tell you it's approved... I dunno guys that's pretty kickass service

I hope mine goes this way

Approved, less than 24hrs again. She even did the ATT for me while we were at it (I forgot to ask myself). These folks are terrific, I have no idea what all of the hate is about.

Holy speedy bureacracy, batman.

I just got a restricted private sale approved/letter received in 3 days. Er, 3 freaking days. I know for some of you guys that's no surprise, but the Ont CFO has often taken 3-4 weeks.

Is this a sign of improving speed, customer service, or should we put on our tin hats and wait for the stormtroopers to arrive?
