TNW 9mm Carbine Range Report

The TNW extended rail foreends I've seen have a sliding key lock that locks the picatinny rail sections together and prevents it from turning.

Ah, didn't know that. Definitely fixes the problem, more or less in the same way I figured out just by a different mechanism. Thanks for pointing that out. Guess I could have added a bit of pic rail to my shroud and set up a lock there as well, though I suppose TNW's solution allows for adjustment of timing which would be a bit beyond my abilities.

Sharps sent me a pic of his ASR, then suggested I upload both of our builds now that we each have different shrouds - his an official M-LOK handguard from TNW, mine a length of 6061 1.5" OD tubing adapted to 'become' the barrel nut by integrating with the stock nut. So here's the two of them, Sharps' with a dot sight, mine with a 2-7x scope and a T20 thermal scope above that with a Nikon offset mount and lens adapted to make eye position relative to each similar.

That grips looks good Gerard as far as helping with the rather short distance to the trigger that TNW designed.

Indeed, that and the more sculpted overall shape drew me to the Ergogrip, though I could have used an extra 1/2" further back for ideal trigger finger placement. But it's a 9mm carbine, not a target pistol, so correct triggering isn't of such huge importance. Think mine was the 'orginal ambidextrous' model. I did a bit of modding on it with Sugru silicone putty to fill in a spot at the top and to bond the bottom plug to the grip, as it kept trying to fall out. The putty takes whatever texture you press into it, so easily matched to the grip texture.

The Beauty and The Beast !!!

I kid Gerard about his much-tinkered with "Star Wars" Carbine while admiring his skills and ingenuity. I prefer to keep things simple as I'm a believer in 'Murphy's Law' - "What can go wrong WILL go wrong at the most inopportune moment."

Before they were 'banned', one of my pals would show up with his much modified/scoped AR 15s that weighed as much or more than my M1 Garand. After market goodies up the ying - triggers, barrels, handguards, etc., etc. He was deadly with them from the bench. I sat and or went prone with my box-stock S&W AR 15s, ringing steel out to 300m with red dot sights and finished off by shooting off hand at the 100 and 150 yd gongs.

He got what he was after and so did I. My military experience along with hunting experience dictates my preference.

I think the simplicity of the TNW design should incorporate some BUIS options. This would not be much of a challenge even if it entailed a spare barrel with front sight.

I'll be getting some flip-up 'iron' sights pretty soon. Looking at the Fab Defense pair. Light enough that they still won't take my ASR over 10lbs total, loaded, but something to have handy either in case the scope should get trashed or I just feel like shooting it in a more compact, lightweight configuration. As it is the weight is a bit over 9lbs. I have a heavier .22" air rifle.

Shot my carbine today with the new handguard installed. Really like the added weight forward and the ability to extend my support hand.

Grouped just as well when I managed the trigger, but for reasons that escape me, it printed several inches higher! Had to crank down the red dot.

Once I did, ringing the 10" x 12" 100m gong was duck soup from a sitting position.

More photos boys,less nattering!!

Tell ya what. You start a thread, you set the rules. Sharps started this thread. It's about his experiences with the TNW ASR in 9mm. 'Nattering' about it seems to be what the thread is about. It's not a picture thread. There are those, too, elsewhere.

Gerard has shared some pics of his mods from time to time. In my case, I'm almost a computer illiterate.

I can turn it on and off and not much else.

I've owned my safe queen TNW ASR in 9mm for a couple of years now and never experienced a malfunction in all the 150 rounds or so fired.

Soooo..... What’s the general consensus on what ammo these like? I have a JRC and it likes the Federal 115gr I feed it but I haven’t tried it in my TNW yet but I notice the buffer spring feels a lot heavier on the TNW. Would 124gr be recommended or any other ammo? Saw a good deal on CCI BLAZER 124gr

The buffer spring supplied with the TNW seems to stiffen up to almost double the weight at full recoil. And considering that proper ejection and feed happens in the last 15% or so of the cycle, that can be a problem. Hence my decision to go with the Strike Industries flatwire AR-15 spring, which offers fairly high initial resistance but then remains fairly consistent throughout the recoil cycle. FTF/FTE nonsense vanished as soon as I made that change. Slicking the various friction surfaces helped as well. And mine really likes subsonic 147gr stuff, especially Winchester JHP, but considering the cost I'm happy enough shooting the much cheaper FMJ 147's from UMC which occasionally drop to just over 1,000fps. Don't know about the lighter stuff as I haven't tested any of that.

Thanks. I was looking at the Federal 130 PCC. Says it’s designed for PCCs if that makes any sense. I’ll see if I can find one of those springs in Canada. If I order one from the states it’ll likely get confiscated by customs if it says AR-15 on anything.

Ill warn everyone now to NEVER, EVER place an online order with Herooutdoors ! As far as im concerned that place needs to go bankrupt.

I've never ordered from them, just posted the first few links to Canadian retailers selling the springs. Care to elaborate as to some background for your harsh words about the store?

They state that it is in stock, when really it isnt.

I place the order alone with a few other items cus I thought it was all in stock, get an automated order confirmation email... then nothing... for weeks. I message them regarding an order update, no reply for weeks. So then I call the store, get a hold of a helpful store front salesman who tells me its been like a year since hes seen that item in stock, and that he doesnt think it ever will be again. Ok can i cancel my order then? Sure, but u gotta do it online. Ok i cancel the order.... nothing... for a week. Then I get an order update that my package has partially shipped. I reject the package at the post office. It goes back to the sender. I email them asking for my refund, nothing.... for weeks. Then i send them another email saying that if i dont get a refund within the week ill take it up with (FRAUD ALERT). I get a reply from the manager within a day. He wants to give a partial refund minus restock and shipping. I threaten with (FRAUD ALERT) again. I get a full refund.

The whole ordeal took about 4 months to sort out !

I later ask about other peoples experiences with this company on an Airsoft forum and immediately get swamped with the same kinds of stories, some of which far worse. Read the same kind of replies regarding that business on a CGN facebook post the other day lol

I also found out that they really dont stock anything. They are a middle man company that just places the order from the main suppliers.

Sounds like they have always been like this. Which makes me wonder why they even bother hosting a webpage if they are going to neglect their online customers so much. They have had plenty of years to correct their ways but in the end they havent. So if they go under they have nothing to blame but themselves.

I used 124 gr in my TNW without any issues
