My buddy asked me to get an idea of the worth of his Moisin Nagant. It's a Westinghouse manufacuture with the czarist crest on the receiver. The metal and stock are in great shape, but knowing my buddy, I suspect the bore is a mess. I may try to get some pics, but off the top of your heads, can anyone give me a "high-low" ballpark number?

Well, well... if you want to become a Mosin-Nagant expert too, first drop that "i" from the name!
Now, for that Westinghouse as for any other collectible, it all depends on condition: if the rifle has been left as-is with no drill&tap, no strip&varnish job, that's a good thing.
If the barrel condition is great, that's a plus but if the barrel is dark because it was shot with corrosive ammo it won't sell well with shooters; a collector will tend to pass over that fact if the piece is a rare one, but the offered price may be less than for a shiny barrelled one.
Can you or your friend take some good close-up pics of the rifle, incluing buttstock (both sides), action (same), barrel root, front and rear sight, etc... ?
Post them here with a description of the markings found and you'll know in short order what his rifle is worth.

The rifle was never f#*ked over, drilled & tapped, cut-down, or otherwise "bubba'ed". I believe it's just a dull oil finish on the wood, with no stock repairs (factory or otherwise). For sure, the bore is a filthy mess though.

Then your friend should do what's the most logical thing to do if he wants to keep that rifle in valuable condition: clean it well.
Problem with these very long barrels (31 1/2" in this case) is that you don't easily find suitably long cleaning rods to clean from the chamber towards the muzzle.
So you have to be a bit more careful cleaning from the muzzle to avoid contact of the cleaning rod with the crown and the rifling. If your friend isn't the careful type, tell him about the Bore Snake and get him to use it.
Who knows: maybe one day you'll be bitten by the Mosin-Nagant bug and you'll make an offer to buy that one ( which is an interesting one, as far as collecting goes).
Does the rifle have an SA stamp within a rectangle on the left side of the barrel root, near the action?

Should I ever get it off him, it'd just be for sale. I don't want to add anymore long arms to my inventory (except a deal on an SKS perhaps). I have a cleaning kit for the FNC1A1, and I have several part rods as well. Since they all fit together, I can make a cleaning rod that's about 4' long, so cleaning from the receiver end wouldn't be a problem. I have Accubore, which has performed beautifully for me so far, but the last time I saw his rifles, they were in REALLY sad shape, bore-wise. Some folks shouldn't be allowed to own nice machinery!
As best as I can recollect, it's a Mod.1891. It's czarist (as I'd stated earlier), and I don't recall any Soviet possession stamps on it. It's walnut stocked, not birch, and it's maybe one that either never made it over before the Oct. '17 revolution, or it somehow escaped the ministrations of the new regime.

He's going to ruin it for the rest of the humanity! that rifle has gone through two wars and numerous local skirmishes nearly intact, it doesn't deserve that kind of treatment!
If you want to sell it after that, do so, it won't stay long on the boards but by any means, save it, please!
