hey CGN'ers,

here is the background my wife and i took our nr and r licenses about 2 years ago as an anniversary gift to each other. i have very little prior experience with firearms but they have always fascinated me. since then we have purchased a 12 Gage pump, 10/22, sks, and a gsg 1911. i have been debating getting into something new and also have some money burning a hole in my pocket. not tones mind you but some to play with. i have been toying with the idea of getting into more tactical shooting. ive contemplated getting a m&p 9 or 40 to start there on the pistol side but i had a funny thought today. i really like building things and tinkering with stuff and what poped into my head was the idea of building an ar as i have always liked them. being in the black rifle forum id assume most as pro ar but i was wonder what are the pros and the cons that you have all faced when approaching these style firearms and also what is the best course of action if i were to undertake this adventure.

Best deal out there for an AR15 is the Norinco M4 clones AND AMMO!!!

We have two 14.5 inch barreled Norinco M4's and they simply work! Lots of fun at the range!

P.S. Her's is PINK, having put PINK furniture on it. I know, I know, your eyes are burning... BUT, it IS the greatest shooting sports ambassador because all the ladies want to shoot it! Even guys want to shoot it to send pics to their ladies!

Building an AR is a great fun project, but it may prove difficult at present since there is a worldwide shortage of AR15 parts. The idiot in charge south of the 49th parallel opened his yap trap and used the words "assault weapon ban" so our wise and freedom-loving gun-owning brethren living under his autocratic socialist rule have literally bought every piece of AR15 paraphernalia in existence right off the store shelves.

In other words, Obama is the AR15 salesman of the year.

It might be some months before you can easily and affordably collect enough parts for a complete build. You might want to snap up a complete rifle from a CGN dealer while there are still any left. It may be some time until they are readily available again, or until the price to build drops below the price to buy.
 
I'm in the process of building my first AR, and parts have been surprisingly easy to find so far. Motiuk has lower receivers that look very interesting with custom engraving, you could order his and hers custom stripped lowers as an anniversary present, then build them up to your liking as you get parts. If you took your RPAL together as an anniversary present, then his & hers custom guns seems like a great follow up present.
 
If you only target shoot then the AR is a great firearm, i hunt a lot as well so an AR type is not an option for me. Have to agree that building his and hers would be a good project.
 
I bought my AR knowing it's a range gun, so there aren't really any cons, a lot of people will say they're great but you can't hunt with it. While that's true, that's like saying I bought a Lamborghini, but I can't take it off road. However, the only real con, is that there are so many accessories available, so they can be a money pit for a little bit... But it'll sort itself out when you have it set up exactly the way you want.... Until you're bored of it, lol

I bought my first AR and built my second.... They both ended up costing relatively the same amount
 
are norc ar's readily available? what kind of prices are they going for? i do like the idea of his and hers guns. she just said to me why do i have to have a girly gun lol. i really like the options for customization and personalization of building my own but price point which will be cheaper off the bat?

There are several styles, usually they are labelled A1 (the vietnam era look with fixed stock and carry handle) A2(longer fixed stock and carry handle I believe) A3(flat top and collapsible stock)

I'm going from memory on those, and may be wrong. The best info is on the brownells website, they have educational videos about the different styles. Barrel length and stock style are the main differences, but also there is the length of the action (pistol, carbine or rifle) and now there are piston and DI uppers to choose from. It seemed very intimidating until I started ordering, everytime I had a question, I just searched and the answers were readily available. I'm still waiting for my parts to arrive so I can begin my actual building. I may be more frustrated later lol.

The hardest part so far was finding a 12.5" barrel as that was my chosen length and it isn't the most common length. I got an NEA 12.5" that wasn't even up on the SFRC website.

The lower receiver is the registered part, my suggestion would be to choose your design and order to present as your gift to her for your next anniversary, then you can build and accessorize them together....let her choose the parts for her own rifle, you end up with your own individual rifle, but the lower receivers will be a matching pair, you can probably even get them with consecutive serial numbers.
 
You will have fun with ANY ar15. my advice is to pick up a norc or 2 and see how you like the platform and what you do and do not want in the future. later build one from scratch yourself it is lots of fun!

+1 Jay for a fun little build that can actually get the ladies involved!
I do recognize where the pic was taken, very nice place to practice indeed :)
