To buy or not to buy a Mossberg 590A1 Class III

Good evening,

I have been looking at this short shotty for a while and its price, even on sale, as only risen so I intend to get it at the next big sale. However, my friends and family say that the novelty of the short shotgun does not survive its lack of utility and that I would be better of with the Magpul version as its a full lenght shotgun with better ergonomics. What do you think?

Thanks for the input,

Don't have the specific class 3 model but a 14" conversion on an older 590a1 - probably one of my favourite guns. I'd highly recommend a streamlight tl-racker forend for a good light. Make sure to get a sling plate that moves the sling connection to the side like the one GG&G.
Great advice on thebsling plate thx. Also, I was gonna get a light for it but I didn't know if I should have an integrated one or not.

That would depend on your intended use. Range toy only? Have at ‘er with the shorty. Hunting a possibility? Then I’d be looking at a different model. Although, a 5rd magazine tube and hunting barrel can always be purchased afterwards.

I mostly agree. But then again, utility will depend a lot on what you're using it for. (sometimes I just can't help myself, sorry)

I don't see the Magpul version having any different applications, to be honest. Neither are threaded for chokes. The big difference appears to be in ergonomics of the stock and forend, and the overall length. The shorter one will be a little lighter, but more obnoxiously loud and blasty. Easier to carry and easier to stow in your vehicle, too. I have a 12" barrel 12ga. I carry it a lot, and I shoot it very little.

No opportunity to handle them before buying?

I have definitely been impressed with mine in conjunction with my buddy’s skeet launcher. And that was the first one I had with bead sights. Now it has GR sights. That being said I certainly wouldn’t advocate its use as a dedicated skeet gun/duck hunting etc….but it’s a good example of its versatility in a pinch.

I love mine, I have the full size and the class III, they are both fantastic but can't hole a candle to 870 Police's slick action.

I'm not a hunter and my class III 590a1 work well and shot similar group size at 25 meters with slug as my full size retrograde 590a1.

870 fan here, too. But I respect the 590, for sure.

Nice touch of class with the wood furniture on your pair.

Don't get me wrong, I love almost every shotguns that ever make even the Chinese and Turkey clone but really nothing come close to the slick action of my old Remmy 870 Police factory 14 inch out of the box.

This 14"A1 is by far the most beautiful shotgun I have seen. Incredible.

Yea, x2! I have the big brother, but where did you get that retro class III? I need one in my life.

I bought the Class III law enforcement then keep my eyes on CGN for the retrograde stock. The forend is a bit tricky since the class III is using a shorter version compare to a full size 590a1. I bought the forend from guy on ebay where he is selling a set with wood shockwave.

Ah ha! Dremel handywork, gotcha. I've been scouring the interwebs for a retrograde class III since I saw yours. This explains why I've come up empty handed.

See if you can find a used Fabarm. Smoothest, best built import I've ever handled. NATO standard. New ones are outa sight. I sold mine for under $700 and wish I hadn't.
A nice shotgun for sure, but NATO doesn’t have a “standard” shotgun. Each nation adopts what they deem best for their needs/budget. Someone got a deal at $700.

Yes I didn't adequately expand on the NATO "standard". Here's what I was referring to:
"the company has been granted a NATO N/CAGE code (#A-1469 − N/CAGE stands for “NATO Commercial and Government Entity”, that being, a NATO-certified provider of weaponry and equipment), and that its pump-action and semi-automatic shotguns for professional purposes are widely popular between élite forces around the world."
