I just got a new Rem. 700 CDL in 35 Whelen and am planning on glass bedding the action. The question is when I do this should I float the barrel or wait to see how it shoots first?
Thanks Bearslayer

I think I'ld try it to see how it shoots before even bedding it. I own several rifles that shot soo good out of the box that I fear bedding them would reduce their accuracy. Best to check first....maybe you don not even have to bed. If you find you do have to bed, then I would free float the barrel at the same time......

more often than not a rifle shoots better when free floated

that being said, Id shoot it as it came fro,m the box first

then try glass bed

then try floating (if accuracy isnt up to snuff)

Shoot it first, if there are any problems with how it shoots that are serious, bedding is enough for Remington to deny warranty.
Better to shoot 1st also as then you KNOW whether it has been improved or not, not all rifles shoot better when floated, most do, but not all

I think it is an advantage if your rifle shoots free floating over a barrel that is bedded... no point of impact changes due to wood changing with the weather.....

Most rifles today will shoot better free floated and if they don't it is a very simple matter to glass in a pressure point.

For many years now I have had repeat customers buy a new rifle and before shooting it, drop it off to have it bedded and floated and the trigger done, recrowned and the scope mounted.

They know that after that has been done there is nothing to do but work a load up. No wondering if a bedding job would make it a bit better..... or maybe it should be floated..... or damn the trigger is lousy.... or did I mount the scope right...

That being said, the plastic stocks that wrap around the metal are probably best left alone until you can afford a real synthetic stock.

I am planning on shooting it first but am the kinda of person who will always want more from a gun so I probably bed and free float anyway trying to get better consistency and accuracy. So if I shoot it and it shoots good could I hurt accuracy by bedding the action and floating the barrel.
