To mod or not to mod for JR shooter??

So,

Here is the thing. I am lucky enough to have 3 (Luke 9, Nick 7 and Will 1)sons. I waited until Luke (the oldest) displayed maturity enough to come with me to the range.


And he has proven to be the best range partner a proud dad could hope for.

But,

He has had some issues with most of my rimfires. They are either too long or too hard to cycle. I do have a few youth .22s, but they are boring.

Would any of you cut a stock on an older semi auto to fit?
So far he loves a Stevens 66c, but I cant bring myself to cut the stock.

I have zero issues cutting up a Savage 64 tho!

My $0.02 is to buy a newer gun with no intrinsic classic/collector value (like the Savage 64 you mention) and hack the stock as required. Something like the 10/22 that is regularly modified would have all sorts of original stocks available on the EE so you could buy a spare, hack it up as required and still have the original gun for when your kids grow into it.

"I do have a few youth .22s, but they are boring." In my case, the semi never came out for years when I was introducing my kids to shooting. I shoot slowly/deliberately and worked hard to make the targets interesting for them..and just far enough away to make it BIT of a challenge. (hit 7-8/10 kind of thing) Reactive targets, tin cans, balloons etc. Not the same situation if you're punching paper at a range and well...kids will be kids when it comes to liking semis.
