Picked up a new Ruger 308 Ultra Lite last week. Happy Birthday to me.
It's such a fine looking rifle, not sure if I am going to fire it or not.
Cleaned it today and selected a scope from the stash and will decide what to do in the morning.
Does anyone have experience with this short barreled Ruger? Looking for expected accuracy and velocities.

Got one for my wife. It always put two into one hole and then one flyer.
That was with Barnes X, Partitions and bulk RP bullets.

Thoughts on the gun itself, they are very loud, VERY. Recoil with top loads felt like it was a 338. It was however a joy to carry. The balance for me was too far back with the pencil barrel making offhand shooting a challenge. Again, making the recoil an issue.
Sold it and never looked back, nice gun just didn't fit the bill we needed. YMMV

hey Happy Birthday to you and congats on the gift! I've been thinking about one, but now that I have read the prior post, It's out! I am not a fan of recoil in any way! Good info on these threads. :)

It'll bark and jump around some, but like Noel says, the biggest problem is going to be getting the pencil barrel to settle down for a quick off hand shot, which sort of defines the purpose of this rifle. I think you could expect minute and a half accuracy, but again, the light barrel will heat quickly, and shooting groups is not what the designer had in mind. Firing 2 shot groups, then allowing it to cool will let it show it's stuff. Topped with a low power variable scope and loaded with some 130 gr TTSXs over a light load of fast burning powder to soften the blast, it would make a dynamite deer rifle.

Unexpected delay in the decision. Got tied up today and will be again tomorrow, being on holidays is running into my want to do things. Still sitting there waiting to be put together but the decision will have to wait until Thursday morning.
I realize it's going to be a bit of a chore to tame this little filly. Can't be any worse than my BLR's in 308 and 358 can it?

I've got one of the Ultra-lites in 270. Was my first rifle and I've still got it and it's still a great little gun. Nice and light and I always find it shoots pretty well, never had an issue with offhand shooting with it. I can't see any reason you shouldn't shoot yours, as far as I know they are not a collectors item.

More recoil than the BLR in 308. Not saying it can't be handled, it should serve you well, shoot for groups like Boomer suggested, the pipe gets hot very fast. They are like packing a .22 RF, mine was 6 1/4 not including scope.

oh boy, it just might be worse! can't say for sure, though! I have both those cals in the BLR's and can handle them quite easily. according to that previous post, it sounds like it could be a a honky-tonk-donkey to shoot! best take the time to check it out, first, before peeling out!
