Today's stupid question: Can .223 AR mags be easily adapted to feed 7.62x39?

I don't think so . Ar mags are practically straight vs 7.62 which are curved due to the cartridges being slightly angled . i may be wrong ...

Even AR mags designed to feed 7.62x39... don't. At least many don't very reliably, particularly full-length ones. The XCR 10-rounders work well in my experience, and aren't expensive. Don't butcher your 5.56 mags.

no. you need a follower, and reshape the top of the mag. not worth the trouble, just buy 7.62 mags

Yes 7.62x39mm functions in 5.56 PMAG in my SKS with AR Mag Adapter.

Next time I go to the range I'll see how it functions in my XCR-L for ya.

A 5 round 5.56 Pmag only holds 3 rounds of X39, as for a LAR/XCR 5.56 mag haven't tried that yet.

It will work but you can't move the rivet to make them hold 5 rounds of x39, you'll be stuck with 3 rounds. You're way better off to buy mags marker for x39 or even better x39 pistol mags.

I'm looking at obtaining a 7.62x39 AR upper. I can get XCR mags from Wolverine, but I'm wondering about a DIY backup solution...

I have a PSA 7.62x39 rifle and use the XCR pistol mags. They are hit and miss. I download the pistol mags to 5-7 rounds for reliability. The problem is the mag body of an AR is a rectangle in both cross section and vertically. That lack of cross sectional taper of the mag body with a 7.62x39 round gives the ammo all sorts of room to screw around in the mag and jump the queue.
Honestly, I would recommend you steer clear of an AR in 7.62x39 because the two designs are not compatible.

Unless perhaps you are looking at a design whereby they've gone back to the drawing board and designed the lower to take AK mags like the KS47 or mutant; but have no personal experience with either of those.
