Tokarev SVT 38 help with info and value please.

as the title says , basically I know very little about these rifles, I do not collect military rifles and probably never will. I bought an estate collection and in it were a bunch of military rifles, some sports and some not. I have all the books and can see all the pricing and have been on gunbroker as well, where in 2006 and 2007 these rifles went for $2300 and over $3000 but that does not necessarily reflect true canadian value or the present economy.

I will be selling all of the items eventually but at the moment am trying to do a little research, historical and value wise.

any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance
Sean

mag numbers do not match but i have 2 extra, another 10 (been corrected, thx 4b1t) and a smaller one, i m guessing 5.

the first rifle is all matching numbers that i can find including the wood, with one questionable, there is no serial number on the bolt itself but there is one on the bottom of the bolt mechanism its a small thin part not really part of the actual solid bolt and there is a number there that does not match the rest of the rifle numbers. It has strong shootable rifling albeit dark and frosted and in need of a really good scrub. Good solid wood as well.

The second rifle is much like the first in condition but the wood number does not match , all the rest do including the bolt on this rifle.

Several books including "Hitlers Garands" (Weaver) and "The German Assault Rifle" (Senich) discuss this rifle. It evolved into the SVT40 and the Germans used that design to create the G41 and later G/K43 rifles.

This is not a common rifle in Canada and would be a Finnish Export or possibly a bringback rifle. It has not been re-finished.

I would say it would go for close to US values. $800-1200.

If interested in a buyer, sent me a PM. It would look great with my six SVT40's.

Cheers

Be prepared to have your inbox filled with PMs.

SVT 38 are rare in Canada.

Don't let anyone low ball you, they are worth good money.

FYI, the spare mag should be 10 round, not 15 (limited to 5 of course)

Yeah, you'll get lots of PMs on that one. I would too except I can't afford the lowball prices already thrown out. I'd hold a PM auction if that were allowed, or put in the EE for a high price and say best offer by date X gets it. Seriously nice find.

I had one and sold it here a few years ago. The stock on mine was beat up and had a number of repairs (that was one of the 38's weaknesses) as well as a big chunk of wood missing from the mag well area. If memory serves, I sold it for $1400, or there abouts. They are scarce - the Russians withdrew them from service and rebuilt them to SVT40 specs. The ones that are found complete are almost always from Finland. Look for an SA stamp in a box on the receiver somewhere - thats the Finnish capture mark.

Nice rifles, but all its got going for it is the rarity factor, after all its a weak pre- SVT-40 design that basically tended to crack into two pieces on the battlefield, which is why it was replaced by the 40. I'd take my 40's over 'em anyday. Cheers.

Good advice here. I don't take you to be naive - I'm sure you can manage the vultures who would want to fool you into selling it for a song. That ilk especially likes going after collections left behind when someone dies, by exploiting the beneficiaries of those collections.

In cases like yours, the best approach seems to be to post lots of pics, after which will follow lots of opinions, including price. Once established, add $100 to the highest sane estimate and list it as OBO - and wait.
