Tokarev SVT-40 vs Norinco M14(305)

I only own a Norinco M-14S, so I really couldn't give an opinion on the SVT-40, but I will say my Norinco has been a solid, reliable rifle. Having said that, I looked over an SVT-40 in the local gun store last weekend, and I've got to say I was impressed, and now I'm tempted to get one eventually as well. I say the solution is to get both.:D

X2. Both!:D

I have both.

Norinco 305 is "made in china" quality. I have my own experience with back sight and my friend has experience with the barrel.

SVT-40 is a gun you should learn about it first, then tune up and it will be awesome (simple example, you need tune up gas chamber - yes, it is designed to be tuned up). However, there is one part, that I would personally manufacture again using stainless steel (small part, but very important). It will make rifle 10 times more reliable. I guess it is a project for the future.

Final word: both need tune up, but giving a current price, I would buy both of them. You would no believe how many rifles I missed in $200-$600 range that are now in $500-$2000 range.

One advantage of an M14 is that it doesn't shoot corrosive ammo like the SVT. You need to clean an SVT, SKS, or any other rifle that shoots corrosive after every outing. With a little practice, the SVT isn't hard to break down and clean though.

I have 3 SVTs and they are very reliable so far. Setting the gas system isn't hard at all, as some would have you believe. You might need to adjust it for different ammo types or big swing in temperature, but its as easy as turning a wrench a few mm. Takes seconds at the range.

anything with rimmed cartridges in a box magazine will be a little less reliable than one without-however either are definately fun shooters and up to moose hunting specs-+1 to the SVT for historical background-+1 to the M-14 in terms of accessories
