Hello all, I need some input. I found a shotgun on the net that Ive been lusting after for a while now. Its new & unfired and is at a really low price for what it is. The seller has provided his name, address scanned photos of his pal and wants a mo or bank draft. He doesn't want to talk to me by phone at home (wife & guns). provided a phone at work (phone fax) that no one answers. The gun price is almost too good to be true but still a fair hunk of change. I have done a fair amount of deals here and had absolutely no fears --Am I being unreasonable in my reservations?

Easy.
1.Get his full name, Canada 411 him. (you'll have a mailing address)

2. Have him begin the transfer with the CFC on the understanding he won't ship the gun until payment has cleared (you now know that A: the gun exists, B:the gun is his to sell, C:He is who he says he is.

3.send payment registered mail

Or: tell us where he is, send the money to a trusted CGN in his area, have the CGN do the deal for you and send him/her a decent bottle of scotch in thanks :)

Id go with this idea^^^^. I found that if it is too good to be true it usually is. I don't even bother with super low priced mint guns. I would send a message to a trusted CGN member that can go pick it up and transfer it in person. They they can send it to you. A lot of people on CGN are true to there word and are great people to deal with. They could help you out.

See if he is comfortable sharing a scan of his drivers license to compare to the PAL, has his address on it to confirm what he provided you is legit. Keep a copy of the money order and register mail it. If the deal goes sour, you have a better case with the police

You're not being unreasonable and are justifiably concerned. There is no excuse for him to not let you contact him by his home phone other than a shady one in my opinion. Very good advise has been given and I urge you to take great caution, I've been in a similar situation with a very desirable Gibson Guitar that turned out upon some legwork to be a very cleverly disguised scam.

I wouldn't send a dime if he won't talk to you or meet you...

Not only because of the probable amount of money involved (atleast $300), but because it's a firearm.

And keep trying that number, or fax something to it... Get a response from someone, fax-lines are traceable too...

Be very careful...

The gun is not in Quebec by any chance is it?? Just before xmas I was faced with a similiar situation. Response to a add I had running for a rifle I had been looking for a while and not common. He sent me pics, pal info ,address etc but would not talk to me.The gun was at least 35% less than it should have been price wise. I walked away to find out that week he had responded to quite a few members wanted adds and was just pulling pics off the internet of what we were looking for. He was banned from the site within days. Same guy later that month has the exact same pics listed on a hunting form for sale.
If you don't have someone to go pick it up for you and pay when they have it in their hands I would walk away and I know that is hard.
Perhaps a member here lives in the same town etc.

Had a similar situation a few months back (on a different forum)... the deal just smelled fishy...

So I stopped over the local police station, explain the situation to them... One of the officer ran a cross check

- The address given didn't match the address for the PAL
- The phone number given did not match the PAL or the address
- The firearm I wanted to buy was not associated with that PAL

Needless to say, I didn't go ahead with the deal...

Yeah, this sounds like good advice.

Not unreasonable but if you have his name, address and PAL search the name on Canada 411 and Google. Then call the number. Could be he's trying to hide something from his wife. Could be he's trying to scam you with a stolen PAL and someone else's personal info.

If he's provided pictures of the gun I'd also search Google Image for the specific model and name of the gun and see if the pictures have popped up elsewhere. If you find the same pictures on Guns America or a similar site then that confirms your suspicions.

What would bug me about this deal is that if it is so good then why has it lasted as long as it has? If it's a scam the guy may have multiple targets and is stringing them and you along.

Regardless what you find don't send money you aren't prepared to loose and when your instincts tell you something they are usually right. Good luck.

I'm in Ontario about an hour east of Toronto. Would be happy to help if the gun is within a couple hours drive. I'm sure there are others in other parts of the country who could lend a hand.

Regards,

James
