too many ducks and geese,no hunters

I live at the mouth of a large river that has a huge marshy delta full of bays and cattails, mud flats, sandbars, rocky points and islands, and is loaded with wild rice. Early season is good, but later on it is very good as it is near a flyway.

New farmers in this area are planting corn/wheat etc. These farms were unplanted for years and now due to this new food supply the early season goose hunting is crazy. There must be at least 5 square miles of marsh and only a couple of boats hunting (including me).

Most hunting is over decoys with some good jump shooting and pass shooting. Goose hunting in early opening is very good. This is just inside northern edge of CENTRAL DISTRICT, 2 minutes away from NORTHERN DISTRICT.

I got tired of watching hundreds of d/g landing and no one to keep them moving so I put a call for help out on the internet for experienced and equipped d/g hunters. I will not guide (but will point out or suggest good spots or areas to cammo up, walk, or set up for pass shooting) and there is no fee. Accommodations are with local lodges/hotels etc with one motor-inn taking the late season hunters. The walleye fishing is also good in this area, with grouse and rabbit also.

Geez, I might be interested in a fowl hunt, Up there. I know some others too!. We should plan a CGN hunt up there. Sounds good! What do you guys think?

I've never hunted ducks before, no one in my family has. But there is about 50 geese in my pond everyday and and a bunch have babies. Me and my 3 brothers will be out opening day, We plan on shooting everyone of them annoying birds.

Hehe, just wait how many you'll see when the guns come out. They always get smart when hunting season arrives :)
 
Thanks for the heads up. I've successfully hunted waterfowl over the years at several southern Ontario locations, but might be interested in making a 2-3day event out of a hunt up your way. I have several friends that I'm trying to get through firearms/hunter safety training this summer and might try and organize one or two trips for the more keen and adventurous members of this crowd.

Sad to say that this is the norm for waterfowl hunting. When I go out to the marsh I am usually the only one there.The duck and goose populations are as good as they have ever been IMHO. I think it's become too costly for the beginner with the special liscence,camo, steel shot,decoys,calls,boat,dog. We are not getting the newbies in the door. There are a lot more deer hunters than waterfowl hunters, they get a liscence and just about any old gun and off they go.

Once the steel shot regs came into effect we lost better than half of our waterfowl hunter in my area.There are ponds here with old fallen down duck blinds,and grown in roads since steel shot introduction.
At one time it was hard to find a good spot to hunt ducks because of the amount of hunters.Atleast then the ducks were pushed around,and made for a good hunt.Now they can just land where they please,and stay put.


I wish the MNR would let us know the # of licences bought now,and the number of licences before lead was banned.
 
I wish there were less hunters where I hunt half the time you end up sharing a blind with some half-crazed skybusters who shoot at anything thats flies even when they are clearly several hundred yards out of range.
 
The wild rice is just ripening and the ducks are starting to gather in small flocks to feed. Lots of canada geese and the locall woodies and mallards are flying and trying out there new flying styles.
have some more blinds to build,all the new areas that were planted with willd rice are coming along very well. lots of feed for our friends. local corn and soya bean crops(mennonites) are very good,should be a long active goose season.
it fly's, it dies!

Post a map with directions and keep 'er comin' ... you'll have enough sky-busters there in no time that you won't have a place to hunt. :eek:

Puttin' these guys up at your house & providing breakfast too ???

Why did the steel shot reg eliminate many hunters? Is it because the steel is much less effective than lead was, thus meaning many shots with no effect, plus needing a new generation of expensive steel friendly shotguns? (those are my best guesses)
