John and I shoot a lot together. Ever since he coached me at 1000 yards I have made him shoot rabbits, ducks, pigeons and last saturday a deer. Now he is no novice but working 12,000 miles from home for the last 20 years means that it takes some doing to get to know the right people. I normally lend him a rifle or shotgun but this time he restocked a 308 target rifle for this weekend. He missed his first cleanly but fortunately bagged a nice Roebuck walking back to the land rover. I too managed to cull an old buk to keep the estate deer in order. I saw about 60 Fallow deer, 1 muntjac and 15 or so Roe. this 2300 acre estate holds a good resident winter population of over 150 Fallow deer as it is not shot over for Pheasant. we had an enjoyable morning culminating in a trip to the butchers where he left with a small spare freezer of mine for his tiny London flat so he can eat well for a couple of weeks. On an adult Roe I'd guessthere are 100 1/2 lb burgers.

Are there wild fallow deer in BC? I read/heard somewhere that there was, maybe on vancouver island? Can't remember. I know there's a few fallow deer farms around BC that breed them for venison. Regardless, they look cool, I'd love to be able to hunt them! I wonder how hard it would be to get them introduced here in BC? I can see them doing really well in a place like the queen charlotte islands where there are no natural predators and tons of food around. Hmmmm...

Anyways, sounds like you guys had a blast, good on ya!

Not sure about wild, but there is an island off Vancouver Island, near Victoria I think, that used to have a private stock of them. The owners would do the guiding thing on the island. That was a few years ago, maybe 15 - 20, so I don't know if they are still in operation. The animals were not penned (to the best of my knowledge), but it is a small island.

Sidney spit had an LEH for fallow deer. The harvest was shared with a first nations band. There was some change to the arrnagement so I don't know if the LEH is still available.

There is a provincial park there that you could hunt. Read a ministry report a few years ago on the deer population and ecology o fhte island. It is available on line if you are interested in B.Cs introduced deer.

Why not come here and hunt unlimited!
I'd love to :D I think I have relatives in england, but I'm not sure...

When you say unlimited, do you mean just the bag limit? Or are there other regulations/restrictions to consider? I remember reading somewhere about minimum muzzle energy regs (can't remember)? To that end, what's the ideal muntjac/roe/fallow deer caliber?

England and wales have tighter ME laws than Scotland but a .243 will do anything here. I use a 6.5 swede or a .303. We are about the be partly harmonised with the Jocks if the Ministry has there way and a 50 grain .22 center fire bullet for muntjac and Chenese water deer will be approved. the british deer Society is up in arms but only 30 years ago ish we were using 12 bore No.6 on all deer as pests. Now we have rules and there more deer than ever. Basically muntjac can be shot all year, Does from end of Oct to end of Feb and bucks from Start of April to end of October. Fill your boots! The ideal calibre is the one that you can kill a deer with, trust me a muntjac may be the size of a dog but they are tough and heart/lung shots are necessary. We also have wild boar if you can get them and there is no calibre limit yet! I always take my 6.5 when paying for a stalk or guiding as it isa cash converter making does into bucks! I walk my own farm of 300 acres with my 303 as it is my cack up gun for those dangerous Zombie rabbits. The estate that I can get you on is 2300 acres and shooting is exclusive from 1 hur before 1st light till 900 and then from 1500- 1600 depending upon season to an hour after last light. This is becaus e of dog walkers and horse riders as it is a working farm estate and they sell access permits to the local villagers. If you time it right a trip over can get you a bisley rifle comp (bring only bolt actions) 3-4 days stalking (£75 per day) and a trip to the relatives. You can drive from one end of this island to the other just in a day (a bl00dy long day mind!). think about it!

Sounds like a blast! I'll have to get my grandma to help me look up the relatives over there, it'd provide a good excuse for my boss to let me go for a week or two :p Would a 30-06 be overkill for those wee muntjacs?

Now theres a fine idea! My wife and I were just discussing where to go on vacation this coming winter. She wants to go to Europe and I want to go to the Caribbean (mmm...beaches ;) ) However, a 3 week trip to England/Ireland/Scotland (with a spot of deer stalking ;) ) may be just what the doctor ordered!! :cool:

TimC is there a website i can look into for info on planning a hunt there IE places to go licenceing costs etc etc etc ? might be something to add as things i did before go

licensing has to be done at this end by a sponsor, I dont think it costs much I will have to check the website for the home office, alternatively type UK visitors firearm permit into google and it should come up with the Met Police website. 30 06 is way too much bullet for Muntjac as is anything really above 6.5. There would be a smoking start to the BBQ. 30 06 is ok for Fallow, Sika and Red, expanding ammo is a must ans I have used .243 for big Fallow and it is ok for even the biggest of reds. I use a 6.5 swede for everything. If there is a problem you can use an estate rifle and keep your own for bigger deer!
I stalk mainly through a guy called Roger Buss who has a website Deerland, D&G consultants. Some of his contacts also have their own land and I also organise his beating on his Bird shoot in Hampshire. That is a good option, Roebuck stalking followed by walk and stand driven pheasant and partridge shooting all on the same day. A duck flight in the evening and maybe a trip for bigger deer the next day or so, what do you think? Either way if you end up with someone else you can always come out for some shooting with me, free pest control is never turned down!

I have the details for permits, here is the link to the pdf;

Here is deerland;

even more www.deer-stalking.co.uk/
& finally our voluntary code of practise; www.basc.org.uk/content/stalkingpractice

I hope this helps, you can see most of the websites dont always include cost but roughly £75 - 100 per day with carcase costs on top. If you go local to me and keep your carcase I can get it butchered by a friend and you could be eating the same day. I can prepare skulls for you on the same day but skins take about 2-3 weeks to tan. All of that can be done for a very small fee, taxidermy is a real pain as good ones usually have a waiting list! Mine was in for about a year and cost £300. A good job though!
