Took a while, and money, but here's my Hi-Cal mag, left-handed SKS

Hi folks,

been on this project for quite a while. Got bits and pieces over the past 6 or 7 months:
- Donor rifle (most parts, minus a stock and the gas piston assembly)
- used and buggered-up plastic stock ('cause, well, it was cheap and the gun has to be kewl, otherwise my two boys will not like it :D )
- HiCal mag adaptor (from another CGN fellow who decided, after acquiring it, to not modify his sks)
- a bunch of 10-round pistol magazines
- Choate mount

Started by getting the mag adaptor on the barreled action. Fellow I know (gunsmith - a good friend to have!) wanted to give it a try. Glad he did the work. The work on the bolt is somewhat tricky.

Modifying the plastic stock was easy to get the mag adaptor to squeeze in.

I'm left-handed. Two years ago I made a left-hand modification for a disabled friend of mine; wanted one for myself ever since I tried his! So I cut the bolt carrier handle and welded it on the left side, and mounted the Choate mount on the right side.

So what we have is a SKS which looks like a 13 year old kid's favorite toy, weights more than an unmodified SKS, cost too much to build, and probably will shoot reasonably well (at best). Hey, why not. Had to try it to see how much more fun it would be to shoot 10 round-mags out of an SKS. All that trouble just for this? :D

Really, only interesting aspect for me is the left side conversion, it's a lot more pleasant to use for me.

Lou

how come you didn't move the safety to the left? I remember an SKS build last year who did that. I would think having the safety on the non dominate side being the biggest issue with leftys

Good eye!

Yeah, I didn't get to that (yet). I know "SKSman" in the US used to have ambidextrous safeties; making it myself last time was very time consuming. Food for thought...

Lefties are usually well adapted to manipulating a RH safety anyways but it would be cool. Lou, since the SKS ejects straight up anyways you could make or modify a shell deflector to mount to the choate mount and send casings ejecting to the left. Not that the upward ejection isn't ambidextrous in nature anyways.

i am lefty but right eye dominant, no issue working the safety, bolt or anything using the righty but that lefty SKS also made me drool a little hahahah nice job brother.... i'll stick to the righty and work it fine..

Hey Lou. Have you changed your mind about moving over to this side of the world? lol. Another nice build. Check out the front site blocks that Hi-Cal has. It would finish it off nicely. I went and bought Cadwells rifle stand for tree-stands. It allows me to move in all directions well seated in my wheel-chair. Thanks again for the support in this hobby.

Thanks for the tips, barefut - i will take a close look at these two ideas. The rifle stand especially for my buddy who received my first lefty sks build.

I finally gave it a good workout at the range and, well, the grin factor is way high. Flawless operation, mags drop freely, but i do go through a lot of ammo :)

I've got parts coming to build another one. Not sure if i'll do the whole lefty conversion though.
