Took my 700 .300 RUM to the range.....

So, like it says, I took my remmy to the range just for kicks (LSS Model...the "pimp" U/M) Anyway, shooting 200 gr partitions (factory loads) it was doing OK at 100 (1.5-2 MOA) but at 200 it opened up WIDE. It was a bit windy, but not enough to cause this. I took it home and pulled it apart.....there was so much laquer build up in the barrel channel the barrel was leaving a dent in it! I spent 2 hours sanding it dow, now the barrels floating. Do you think I will see an improvement? Or was the factory "full length barrel bedding with laquer" actually helping the gun?

Anybody else have the stailess/laminate model that can shere their experience?

Thanks!

Ryan

I had to toss the factory stock off my BDL S/S with the plastc factory crap and get it into a top quality HS Precision stock before I saw any real improvements. Mine shot very poorly with the 180 factory swifts, but with handloads of the 200 g Nosler AccuBond ...Wow what a difference. Accuracy actually gets better out at 200 and 300 than at 50-100. If your accuracy doesn't improve may I suggest a Hogue full aluminum bedding block stock.

My Sendero SF shoots MOA on a bad day sometimes much better. I have only shot Factory Remington 180 gr Nosler partitions. But the sendro comes with a HS precision stock to start with.

I love my 300 ultra. Animals don't like it so much though.

Does your sendero stock actually say h-s precision on it?My 700vssf has a stock that looks like an h-s stock but is apparently a copy made by another company that also uses the aluminum v block system.

Your laquer bedding is by accident as it somehow missed the QC monkey at Remington.Since you have removed it, the poor accuracy will likely be solved. If it does not solve the issue, check to see if the lugs need lapping.

I have the LSS in 300 RUM also. I removed the bridge in the barrell channel, free floated it and glass bedded the action as well as installed a Timney trigger. Accuracy improved after all that but it was still over MOA. I then put two little bumps of bedding gel in the fore end to put a little bit of up pressure on the barrel. That really improved the accuracy of the rifle. It shoots better than I can now (My skills are not great) I can normally get MOA out of it now and often get 3 shots to cut the same hole.

I put the two bumps about 2 inchs back from the tip of the forend and located slightly up the sides of the barrel channel. I then sanded the bumps down carefully so that they would put equal pressure on the barrel to center it in the barrel channel. I have about 7 pounds of up pressure on the barrel.

I could maybe explain it this way too, The two bumps are at 4 O'clock and 8 O'clock in the barrel channel if you imagine it like that.

I had found with the factory laquer bridge that it came with the rifle was shooting flyers constantly because the barrel was hoping off that bridge during recoil and changing the pressure on the barrel.

Klein Gunthers came with a bedding method similar to this on some of there rifles that were supposed to be 1/2 MOA garrenteed rifles.

My theory on why it works is that now with the pressure on the barrel the stock takes up some of the barrel whip during firing and lessens the whip effect. Being a Laminated stock it shouldn't warp much but I coated the barrel channel to seal it from moisture anyhow. So far it hasn't changed Point of impact in almost a year.
