I took Martini Henry aka my wife hunting for the first time yesterday. We've been scouting all summer and Sept 24th was opening day for rifle so out we went. About a 1/2hr after sunrise she spotted a young bull moose and I managed to call him in to within 25m of us but we didn't have a moose tag so we let him off for this year ;) shortly after this we hear a large animal in the trees behind us but I can't see it, a little while later we hear a woof sound and I figure it is a black bear that has been on the trail camera near by.

Around noon I left her with a fire to go check out some near by cut blocks, about 2hrs later I'm heading back as she radios me to say there is a huge Grizzly Bear looking at her. The transmission is a bit unclear but what I get out if it is there is a big grizzly in heavy regrowth between us. I know she has forgotten her bear spray and her rifle is a 7.62x39 so I'm pushing hard to get back to her without running into the bear myself.

Anyway I get back there and all is well, the bear has buggered off. It turns out the bear she has seen is the big one that we got a trail cam pic of earlier this summer a few km away from this spot. We remained in your ambush site for the rest of the day watching an hunting owl and other small game and finally just after sunset I hear something coming towards us from our blind side. I'm thinking that it is the bear again and take point between the sound and my wife and try to see what it is. Finally I can see a nice four point rack through a hole in the bush. I wait a few more minutes and there are four nice mule deer bucks walking in front of us and my 338win Ruger M77 takes the closest one.

We where a little tense when we where dealing with a the buck due to the bear but the wife pulled guard duty while I dragged the bugger over ridge and back to the truck. We got home at midnight and Martini Henry is now hooked on hunting :D

when i first saw ur post title i was like, That sounds like a mistake. :p

good story tho ! im glad she never had to use her rifle on the grizzly. best of luck to you both this season ! hope she enjoys it all.

My wife is my hunting buddy also . Good stuff . No pics but she got her limit of grouse today . Martini , next time a grizz comes up drive your fist down it's throat , grab him by the tail and turn him inside out . They look funny runnin' away backwards .:D

in fact he had to stop me from shooting another deer from the same bachelor herd. Bucky's mates were just hanging around going "Huh? WTF happened?". Spent most of today skinning and "dismantling" mr. deer - now have a whole fridge full of meat cooling down and aging before we butcher it properly.

I'm going to shoot the next one :p we still have three more tags to fill. And them grouse had better watch out too.

Mine comes with me on most trips, and hunts. What better way to enjoy the things I like most with my Lady/best friend. I also stay very warm at night. Its too bad, but some ladies are just too much of a princess to get out in the bush. My Lady hunts like a girl, and is proud of it. Some of our best time together is spent hunting, fishing, shooting, and quading. We regularly go out with a buddy and his wife. Hunting is a couples thing. I've introduced several ladies to life in the hunting camp, and liked it. Its not as brutal and harsh as some of the stories make it out to be. I encourage everyone to take their ladies out. More hunters, more firearm owners, more fun.

Mine first came out and shot with a camera. Although she was an already accomplished hiker/mountain climber the gun and shooting thing was very new to her. Once I got her a Nikon D90, then she never wanted to miss a trip. After several seasons of slow introduction to firearms and hunting, she took the firearms and hunter Education courses and is now a firearm owner with her own tags. She's not a hard core hunter like some of the guys as she likes to sleep in and have a jammie morning by the fire when everyone is gone. Hence: "Hunts like a girl". The "indoor potty" discussion is always ongoing, but for the most part we stay warm and dry and we eat very well. Its not hard for a lady to participate as she sees fit. Go girl Go...

I think the thread title should have read "....First time hunting in North America"

I grew up in south east asia and have gone hunting there with my great-uncles. Had a few wild birds with my catapult as a kid but my great uncles didnt let me shoot any four legs (as we call deer and bucks and antelopes there) as the recoil would've knocked me over - i am quite small at the time (still am!).

My impression of hunting here is different than in Asia. The forest is unnervingly quiet here compared to the constant insect noise and primates yelling in the trees. The game is much bigger. The deers we shoot in Asia are quite tiny - smaller than whitetail deer even. No problem hauling game back that way - just slung on your shoulders.

No way i can do that with a mule deer, or a moose!

TAKING THE WIFE HUNTING..... absolutely. The old girl loves to tell everyone about her hunting experiences but is not even close to the motivation she expresses to strangers. She can hole my 358 STA better than most guys. Almost as well as me. Her rifle is a 300 Win Mag. She was so proud of her first Whitetail. As was her dad that has since past away. Her being the baby of the brood. LOL She has made so of the best shots I've seen. A antelope doe at just under 400 yards, her first WT buck just as the sun was setting at 200 yards and she just centered on the white patch on his chest. She is faster acquiring her shot that most guys I've hunted with. So how do you motivated them. She sure doesn't see hunting as I do. It's meat and very good meals. But on the other hand to get an animal that is "better" than me she is very impressed. She shot a couple of WT bucks one year two days apart. One on my tag, of course. Both better than I have on the wall. A month later my back went out and I was off work for nine months, we were unable to have them done up. The old girl has been out with me looking for speed goats lately. Totally bored until a half ass buck shows up then it's all good.

As difficult as they may be if you can motivate your spouse, partner to hunt with you there is nothing better. There is a reason why you decided to try(lol) and spend the rest of your life with them. Add to have a passion shared is just to special.

Do I spend this or not. LOL , F*** it I'm curious as to how many other guys have this same sort of stuff happening.

part of the reason i moved to canada from the UK. My buddies there are "bambi lovers" and gets horrified by my inclination to go whack some bunnies/squirrels/birds for food. Heck I even had to teach a few of my friends how to butcher a chicken or clean a fish as they have never encountered non-fileted meats

Before I met HD most guys I hang out with are girlier compared to me LOL, with exception of a SA ex-ranger I was dating briefly, he took me game spotting in Kruger Park and I *shot* a few with my Canon SLR: Kudus, impalas, sables, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, wild dogs. Great times. Would love to go back to africa again.
