Top dead centre for brake timing

Just curious what others do to mark top dead centre when threading for a muzzle brake.

I normally run a string through the aft scope base screw hole then I line up all the hole with the string and mark TDC on a piece of masking tape before removing the barrel. Last night I used a laser level fix above the rifle shooting a straight line across the action and barrel. I did the string method just before and my marking was the same as the level.

I use a level on the action and a level on a rod through a port.

Level through a port on the brake?

My next one is too short to keep the action on I have to take the barrel off so I need to mark the barrel before removing.

I use levels like guntec. Short barrels, I have used an old receiver stub or threaded collar with a flat spot to level from where the action would sit square.
