I carry a 12ga mossberg 590 20" mariner in the woods, at work, for bear protection. It has the pistol grip on now; but, I have to admit that I am a lot better shot from the sholder. Length of the shotty is an issue for me, the smaller the better.

Any advice on a top folding stock for shotties. I am looking at the ATI gunstock.

or is this thing going to rip my f*@#ing sholder off?

It will hurt LESS than a full stock. For sure. It's got recoil reducing springs in it.

I just put a SpecOps stock on my 14" 870 last night... hope to get out and shoot the thing soon!

Yah I watched the video. Looks super cool. but you know how companies make the product look really really good. But thats good to hear that they really work.

Well, Remington has endorsed the product and now uses it in the LE line of shotguns. I would say that's a pretty clear indicator that it works.

Ya know what you mean, but thanks for the offer, I trust you. That video with the guy putting his sholder to the wall pretty much did it for me.

I will vouch for the Knoxx spec ops...never thought that I would be able to shoot a slug with one hand on the gun, but I can with this. (the other was holding a flashlight)

no no nothing illegal...really......Im serious.......not kidding :runaway:

the guys at questar are really good just hard to get hold of....just fill the form out and send it in, and in a week or so you will have a nice package at your door.:dancingbanana:

I like my Choate top folder. It makes the 500 very compact when folded. It's all steel so it can take the hard knocks and the exposure to bug dope.

I can hit what I'm aiming at with it. Nothing sucks worse for me than trying to shoot reasonably accurately with a pistol grip only and heavy loads.

I like the tactical light mount for the 500. I got it at Dave's Surplus. I have a TLR-1 on it now. It's a good thing not having to aim a shotgun with one hand and shine a flashlight with the other, especially at 3am with something furry digging around someone's tent.

I've got the choate top folder on my mossy 590 (same basic set up as geologist) and I like it but its not exactly comfortable to shoot very long with 3" shells. If bear protection is what its really for, I believe you will not be thinking of recoil issues if you need to shoot. If you plan to shoot the gun often I would go with the spec ops.

I've got the ATI top folder on my Defender.....The recoil seems to not have changed....if it did change than its very minimal.....I say go for it...folds up nicely and looks VERY cool!!!!!!!

Hehe I've used several of the commonly found folding stocks over the years in my quest to find the right compact shottie for me, so I do have some opinions on them:

The ATI top folding stock is ok. I used one on my 870 for several years. My only complaint about it was that it does have sharp edges that you will need to file or sand off. Mine in particular cut the first knuckle of my thumb the first time I went out shooting with it. For the price, it is a decent stock that is streamlined against the shotgun and reasonably solid to shoot. It is not particularly quick to the shoulder though.

The Choate I found to be clunky and awkward. Probably the most solid of the bunch, but I didn't like the aesthetics, and like I said, awkward feeling.

The Remington steel top folding stock is ok. My major problem with it was that the one I had was rattley and felt loose. Could have just been the one that I had - it was police surplus - but I was never completely confident shouldering it.

The Knoxx Cop Stock is highly touted by those that have them, but I really do not like it's aesthetics. I was constantly hooking stuff on the stock when I was pulling the gun out of the truck, duffle bag, etc... when it was folded. Strangely I never fired a round with that stock attached. It was loaned to me with the promise that "this is the ultimate folding stock". I took it on vacation without having time to test shoot it and came back saying, "No, it catches on everything." Fine for people who are organized to carry firearms, like police of course :) . But like I said, quite a lot of the time, mine is in a duffle bag, or behind the seat with a lot of other shtuff.

The ATI side folder is crap. So is the forearm replacement that comes with it. The stock itself kinks at the joint when you shoot it, and the replacement forearm is not fibreglass reinforced plastic, it's made out of the same kind of cheap plastic that they used to make GI Joes with. It's crap.

The Butler Creek side folder is - like the Choate - solid, but awkward and inconvenient. I did not use it much or long. I had replaced the forearm with a shorter one (for use with side folders) at the time and did not like the stroke or handling. I got rid of both in short order.

To be utterly honest with you, after all of that, the stock that I have on my shottie now is: A normal fixed stock in synthetic. I shortened the gun by switching to a 12.5" barrel from an 18" and was much more satisfied with that than I was with any of the folding stocks I have tried. I will likely by a Knoxx SpecOps stock next year and try that too though.

Well I have used every stock you have mentioned there as well except the choate, and i still say the knoxx stocks beat out the rest....and i have SHOT one....repeatedly ;)

Butler creek handpiece is too slim and the plastic molding will irritate your hand to no end until it feels like your hand is taking more recoil than your shoulder. ATI is well.......economy stocks in my opinion. THey do the job, thats it, dont expect anything spectacular, and yah the edges are not a very nice addition, and yah ATI side folder does suck.

I carry my Copstock equipped shotty in a duffel bag or slid down the side of the ski pockets in a backpack. Never had a problem. And the ergonomics for a folder are 2nd to none compared ot hte competition. The hogue overmold grip is nicer and more comfortable than the rest....Makes shooting a folder a pleasure rather than a pain.

you really dont lke the looks of the copstock? I dont think its bad, nothing spectacular though. I also like how you can still sight with the top folded up, even though i dobut that is a hugely useful useage.
