Top pick cal

Depends on recoil sensitivity and whether you reload.
If recoil/muzzle break is ok and you reload it's hard to
beat 300WinMag. If very long range isn't critical
308 is great.

I flip-Flopped between .308 and .260 for a "do it all" Ended up with .308 for ease of ammo in the end. But now, or if you reload, or probably soon in Canada getting match grade .260 will not be an issue.

I'm a "no replacement for displacement" kinda guy, so my pick would be 300 Win mag or 300 RUM.
If you would've said "can hunt medium game" I would have said 308/6.5x55.

7mmRem or .300Win Mag. I believe the OP mentioned long range, either of these calibres leave the .308 in the dust in terms of performance. Yes they have more recoil and cost more to shoot but the .308 can't touch their performance.
I don't want to start a sh!tstorm here(it seems I've been doing that a lot lately here, Sorry), thats just my opinion.

284 WIN. 180 grain 7mm bullet has high B.C. It will shoot well at long range for plinking and deer. For big game, under 200 yards. It will shoot well with minor recoil.

(You have to neck up from 6.5x284 to straight 284).

I was going to say .308 but upon a re-read of the OP's parameters I am going to go back in time to, yes, the 30-06. Taken pretty much anything that walks in all continents including the twolegged kind by a certain USMC sniper now, sadly, passed. Would be very accurate with the correct load and would reach out past where the .308 begains to falter.
