Hi Guys,

Just purchased a vortex scope to mount on my .22. The rings come supplied with a little torx allen key and say to torque no more than 18 in/lbs. I will order a small in/lb torque wrench but in the mean time roughy how tight and how important is that torque spec. I know you don't want to over tighten and crush the tube but can you easily over tighten with the supplied little torx allen wrench?

Thanks.

Can you easily overtighten them with the supplied wrench - Yes very easily. It is also in my experience that vortex optics are incredibly sensitive to over torqueing. It is almost like their tubes are of a lesser quality (soft) compared to say Burris or Leopold. I love my vortex optics don't get me wrong, just follow the torque specs and you will be golden.

Thanks for the reply. For now i tightened them to just barely snug with the supplied wrench. I will adjust when the proper tool arrives.

Hey Adam

The on going question ... seems manufacturers have their
recommendations and everyone else does what they want / think is rite,.

It is suprizing how much pressure 18 in lbs /2N takes.

I have Delta Stryker , Athlon & Kahles scopes with
Talley rings & bases along with Picatini rails.

My go to torque is 2n/18in on rings 3n/26in on bases & rails.

...skwerl

Adam, Unless you carry the rifle with the scope as a handle, a .22 shouldn't cause a scope to move around tightened to just 'light' torque pressure. I bought an 'analog' Wheeler gage, not the digital. And on my 22s I just set it at 15-ish. Higher calibres I go a bit tighter per mfrs advice for the scope.

And as Falconflyer says, I'm using that gage lots, adjusting action and barrel torques on my CZs and other rifles as I go out with them. ca $100 bucks at BP/Cab or amazon.

If you use a thumb and one finger and hold the short end of the Torx Allen wrench you won't over torque the screws... if you use full force two fingers on the long end you can over tighten.

I've unknowingly and I overtightened plenty of rings, so far luck has been with me and my POI is OK

I have done similar, before I got a torque indicating tool - however, I think some rings are "dumb made" - was a CZ 452 Silhouette that I had got a few years ago - I bought CZ brand rings for it - I installed a Mueller scope (was "the scope" to use at the time, as per Rimfire Central). However, the angle of the ring cap screws press the ring caps into the scope body - not really visible when installed - but when dismantled, the damage was evident. I recall working those sharp edge down with a file - but re-installed the same scope - damage and all - is still the scope on that rifle today - the last that I had seen it - my Grandson has it now.

Not sure that many folk undo what they just put together - so do not know what damage they caused by doing what they did - certainly was the case for me in that instance.
