Hey Gunners,

I hear a lot of talk about making sure that the screws that connect your action to your stock being at specific torque levels. I am just wondering if gunsmiths actually use low range torque wrenches or do they just tighten by hand. If Torque wrenches are nessesary where can you find low level ones? The ones at Canadian tire and such are all rated from 0-200Nm (newton Metres) which doesnt really work if you need to adjust to 6Nm.

Cheers

colt45cz75, my main beef with wheelers is its hard to get a decent grip on the thing to torque something down to 65 inch pounds and do it repeatably

Wheeler Fat Wrench. Comes with some basic screw driver bits and the important part a chart that identifies what torque for the different applications, scope base screws, ring screws, and action screws with wood, synthetic or pillar bedded stocks.

CT is for joe-shmoes.

Go to a proper INDUSTRIAL tool supply shop. If they dont have it, they can normally order it.

DO NOT expect to pay Canadian Tyre prices!!!

I prefer to have an adjustable torque wrench which can also be used to torque scope mount screws (not to mention automotive uses). I personally believe that 65 in-lbs is too much torque on the action screws if the action is properly bedded to the stock. If you bring the screws to 65 in-lbs, give them a tap with a hammer, recheck the torque, then index the position of the screw heads, chances are that over time the screws will stretch and the index marks won't line up at 65 in-lbs. I think 55 in-lbs is about the limit.
