Well i have $450 to spend on guns and I'm looking for another handgun. I currently have a Colt Woodsman .22lr right now that i got from my grandfather and shoot with him every week. I have had my eye one 2 different guns for some time now as well as researching both.

I know I want a 1911 but which one eludes me. My choices are the GSG 1911 in .22lr or the Norinco NP29 1911 in 9mm. I know they are different calibers but how would the quality/function be between them?

Yes .22 ammo is cheaper but 9mm could be more fun? it will just be for recreational target shooting, no competitions as of now. I am just wondering if 9mm is that much different? and will i regret not buying the almost same gun in a cheaper to shoot caliber? :slap:

any help and opinions are welcomed!

I'd suggest you plan ahead and if you're going to get a 9mm that it be one which fits into one of the production classes for either IPSC or IDPA. Buying such a gun will cost a little more up front but it's one which will then be able to do it all from plinking to matches.

The Norc NP29 could be good but you limit yourself to shooting in what can be a higher class if this matters to you. Using a single action only pistol in IPSC puts you automatically into Standard class where you'll be up against some fancy trimmed out single and double stack 1911/2011's and other single action only guns with magwells and other tricks.

I also found that my NP29 came with a few rough points that need tinkering with to make them fully proper for operation. Nothing that keeps it from being a darn accurate shooter but things that are annoying when stripping it down for cleaning and the safety that doesn't really snap into the safe position with the sort of tension I feel it should have. Both issues are simple enough to fix but all in all I now wish I'd paid more and gotten something like an STI Spartan in 9mm.

A wise way to go would be to go out to one of the local competitions with a box or two of 9mm ammo. Maybe even offer to help out while spectating. This will put you in good enough with the shooters that when you mention that you're after a 9mm gun and that you're likeing the sort of event they are holding that you'll more than likely find yourself flooded with offers to try out their guns. That's where it's nice to have some ammo to use or at least offer to use. A lot of the guys will tell you to save it. But they'll like the fact that you offered.

I would also move to 9mm. My first two guns were .22 and 9mm and I think they were a great way to start out. On the firearms. I would be fine with a Norc but I went with a CZ75b. I don't want to spend your money but there are a lot of them for the 600$ range on the EE.

Thanks guys! At this point i feel like i am leaning towards the 9mm as I think i am scratching to try something new. Ive shot a .40 glock a while back and remember absolutely loving the larger caliber.

Thanks for the link on the SAM, ive also been looking at the R.I.A. G.I:
http://frontierfirearms.ca/index.php/firearms/handguns/armscore/ria-g-i-9mm-parkarized.html

I have read reviews on it and they all seem to be very good. It also just looks higher quality then the norinco. I think i might be better off to save up a little more and get something thats a little better quality. Will pay off in the long run i guess.

if you are looking for a 9mm, i would suggest an Norinco NP 22, clone version of a Sig Sauer 226. I have had the opportunity to shoot both.

The very first thing I noticed in comparison is the feel of the gun. Found the NP 29 too rough of an exterior. Secondly upon firing, the NP 22 had a smoother trigger pull. Three, easier break down to clean. Fourth is the price....both are comparable. Last but not least is the picatinny rail, which the NP29 has for future attachments......

But if you plan to shoot IPSC, the Norc Sig 226 copy will get you a 9mm within your budget, Built like a ROCK, ready with double stack to shoot production class, and maybe $50 in springs and parts and its like a full up SIG, Smooth and reliable. :D

That Said , My Go to Gun is ALWAYS my STI Spartan 9mm :D, I mean with the 10 rd Tripp reasearch mags and a simple $50 magewell, i can compete with the best of them in Standard Class, and shoot PPC as well. 1911's ROCK!

The GSG is a fun gun to shoot, easy to shoot with no recoil, cheap ammo. 2 bucks for box of 50rnds.

If you can afford the ammo the NP 29 gets you into real gun with recoil. Box of 50 is ~$14. Easy to shoot 4 boxes. I like to shoot at least 6 box per range trip so that's $84 vs. $12 for 22LR.

9mm is way more fun than 22lr, 40S&W kicks harder, 45ACP even more. Just be sure you can afford to shoot it cause you'll only get so much kick from just fondling the pistol.

I like my GSG it’s a great gun and it shoots well, but……….I got bored pretty quick with .22 I like it cause it’s a 1911 and not for its caliber. I want the kick and noise of a larger round. I recommend going at least 9mm.

Well guys thanks for everything. I just put a Norinco NP29 9mm 1911 on order from CanadaAmmo along with some wood grips panels. It's good enough for what i need and should be a good pistol to be able to tinker around with. Only cane to $412 so i have some money right away for ammo and so save up for my AR upper. I'll post some pictures and range report when i get it :)
