haha, the soft body armour i have has the the flaps that curve around your sides (like on your love handles) . does this carrier have the side panel slot incorporated.

I've always been curious about this when reading on CGN. Anyone mind explaining the reason for " finishing " the plate that way and why they sell unfinished ones? The difference and purpose? Thanks for any info.

Finished plates have an "Anti-spall" coating on them that is supposed to help with fragments if your plate was struck by a round. Unfinished plates have a higher chance of fragments deflecting up into the face of the person wearing the plates. I am not sure how well it works, I am sure there are tests on youtube.

It’s called spalling. The finish captures the bullet fragments after it’s shattered on the metal preventing neck chin and arms from being hit by the debris.

Unfinished plates are available because they’re cheaper and there’s other products available to perform the same function as the coatings. For the amount of times one expects to be shot they may also find it acceptable to receive minor injuries from the bullet fragments after most of the energy is out of them from the initial impact. This would apply to someone who wishes to wear protection for safety at a range perhaps. The likelihood of taking on repeat fire is very low and the plates are only there to prevent serious injury.

Law enforcement and military work in an environment where they may need to stay in a fight after being shot at. The ant-spalling coating will keep them safe and in the fight even after being hit on the plates.
