TR marked #1mkIII

I went to grab some parts off an old no1mk3 barrelled receiver the other day from the parts bucket, and noticed underneath the black paint coating that under the markings on the wrist were the letters TR. I have not seen this before on the no1mk3, but then again I am not really a collector of the earlier Enfields. Does this merely mean the rifle was designated "target rifle" for the commercial market, or was it a designation in the military?

I know, I know, this thread is useless without pics. If need be, I'll drag the camera out to the shop today and snap some photos.

"TR" I believe, means that it was tested and recommended for fitting a telescopic sight to. Doesn't necessarily mean that it got a scope in the end, but it was probably in a lot chosen for above average accuracy. Just going by what I know of the No4's.

But this is a No. 1 Mk III! I'll bet there is an "F" in front of the TR and it has been through factory refurbishment.

Don't bet more than you can afford. There is nothing before the TR.

Oddly enough I have a 1917 smle with the same TR on the wrist and although the wrist doesn't appear that worn, I just assumed the "F" had worn off. Maybe not....
