My Traditions Hawken Woodsman is in sad need of a new nipple barrel clean out screw. Any idea as to where to source such a thing? CA source preferred.

Discovered today that all of my nipples (4) are flared to the point of not accepting a #11 cap without a lot of grief. They haven't been used all that much. Is this common? According to the packaging they are stainless steel, which I would have though would be harder than that.

Thanks,

M

Chuck your nipples in an electric drill, and spin them against a file. This will remove the flare.
TOW, Dixiegun.com should be able to supply new ones.
No idea where you could order a replacement Traditions cleanout screw. What is the thread size? Should be possible to fit a screw, no reason to find a factory replacement.

I suspect that part of the flaring problem might have to do with this being a Traditions product.
I have noticed that they like using separate drum bolsters on a lot of their percussion guns, and that the nipple does not quite line up with the hammer such that hammer can strike the end of the nipple squarely. Instead, the nipple top face is at a slight angle to the striking face of the hammer. This would result in nipples being more likely to be peened out on one side, since the hammer blow is concentrated on the high side of that nipple.

As such, if the problem can't be corrected by rotating and thereby adjusting the angle of the bolster (drum), then file-turning the nipples to remove the flare might be the best solution. That way the top face of the nipple would be angled slightly and will match up with the hammer face, and the cap will still fit well and fire.

Yup, I cleaned up my 4 nipples just as you described. Cabela's carries replacements.

As for the clean out screw thread size, I haven't a clue, but I suspect it's metric.

Thanks! I went looking there and got totally lost trying to figure out how to navigate their website.

Knowing the tread now, I'll try sourcing a hex head cap screw locally.

Found some M5-0.8 hex head cap screws! Canadian Tire of all places.
Had to sift through all of the bins. Bin contents didn't match the bin labels? Not even close.

Thanks for the help people.
