Hi Folks,
Just bought this nice looking ML, Never used a ML before.
What shall i be careful of and how to take good care of it .
Give some Cleaning and maintaining tips.
How good is American Pioneer Powder as compared to other, I just bought it ,they say its better than others and do not leave much residue.
Can i Use 150 Grain of powder , advice if u use Traditions .
 
Any traditions ML i've seen will take the 150 gr. magnum charge.The advantage to american pioneer or triple 7 without the sulphur , is that they are without sulphur, which is the corrosive component to black powder. They can be cleaned with blackpowder cleaner or hot soapy water. Your gun should have it stamped somewhere or the owners manual can confirm the maximum powder charge.Read it.When you get your powder pellets in and the bullet seated snuggly on top of them, mark your ramrod for future loads. One of the most dangerous things with a muzzle loader is having a gap between the powder pellets and the bullet.The traditions aren't the prettiest gun in the world but they are good shooters.
 
One thing I learnt with my modern in-line muzzleloaders is to not worry about the clean up and buy a smokless Savage ML II :D Sorry couldnt resist.

I had a T/C Omega and kept her clean as possible after my shoots. I found that on the bench my groups were always better when the barrel was fouled.

Another tip I suggest is to load your powder and sabot/bullet and mark your ram rod. This will always let you know if you are loaded or not.

Bore butter is a real help in loading sabot bullets. I've found the Powerbelt bullets with the plastic on the base , much easier to get down the barrel.

I'm a big believer in 777, not that American Powder stuff.

Don't get all caught up with brand name cleaning stuff. Swab between shots with a patch that is damp with windex or summer windsheild washer fluid. Clean the hard to reach stuff with Hoppe's #9, and an wipe down the whole gun with WHATEVER gun oil you have. You DO NOT specifiic muzzleoader care products that have been secreted from the scrotum of the burmese monkey that has been specificially formulated for you Traditions / CVA / Knight, etc product.

I would use powerbelts only it I lost a bet. It's just a conical bullet with a plastic hula skirt. Far superior bullet choices out there.

Also, the difference between 100gr and 150gr charge is only about 10% more speed for 50% more powder. Most modern guns will shoot 150gr, but very few are test proofed for it. And no POWDER manufacturer will ever recommend using 150gr charges.
 
I have a Pursuit LT as well as a Traditions Hawken. I use their EZ Clean solvent for powder residue and general cleaning, followed by their Wonder Lube 1000 for lubrication (patches and bore) and barrel protection. Never had any problems with either product. Priced fair as well.

As for shooting with a 150 gr charge you can use that load safely but I found 90 to 110 gr charges plenty with 250 and 300 gr Sabots, and 385 gr conicals. 60 gr for 50 cal round ball (100 meters).

Triple 7 and Pyrodex pellets work well, but for cost pinching I use Pyrodex loose and 777 loose powders, with Pyrodex being the cheapest around $18.00 an pound.

I have a Pursuit Pro and My Deer load is 130gr 777 behind a 250 gr SST. I tried the Powerbelts but they were very inconsistent in my gun.

Be sure to take the gun apart, clean and oil everything after a shooting session. It is a bit of work but keeps the smoke pole in good shape.

I am methodical when sighting in or at the range.
I run a brush through the barrel, spray a patch with soapy water to take out any residue, dry patch then a light patch of bore butter.
In the field if I have to take a second shot which I have had to do on two occasions, I pour in the pellets as fast as I can, ram a bullet down and load the primer.

The best thing you can do is be consistent when you load. if you are trying different bullets or sighting in, do the same routine.
