Transferring guns privately question

I've purchased from an online business and when I got the rifle there was a proof of transfer slip in the box.

If I do a private deal in the EE here and I recieve the gun in the mail I don't think I will have any proof that the gun has been transferred into my name...can I shoot it right away or do I have to wait for the registration certificate in the mail? I do have the certificate number if that means anything.

If I do have to wait for the actual certificate how long does it usually take? The lady said it will be mailed on thursday and I'm in SW ont.

If you got it in the mail the transfer must be completed and you should have got the transfer Ref # to complete the transfer so your go to go make sure you have the Ref # with you
 
Yes you need your paperwork before you go out. Failure to provide it when asked would result in confiscation.
 
If I'm not mistaken, you have to have actual original cert. Copies usually work thou. The worst that can happen, your guns may be seized till you produce the cert.
Do not open cases with restricted on the road (inspection of whatnot) and don't handle guns - if they really wanna get you, the can say you pointed the gun at some person 10km away... which is an offence.
Never volunteer info when pulled over, but don't lie either.
 
Got a few mixed answers here so I decided better be safe than sorry and called the CFC. They confirmed that you did need the registration certificate. The confirmation # you get on the phone after completing the transfer only permits you to possess and transport and store the gun...but not shoot it :confused: Makes no sense to me but anyways.
 
Big FAIL. The confirmation # IS THE REGISTRATION until you actually receive it in the mail. Take the gun shooting or whatever, just have the confirmation number/sheet on you until the registration comes in the mail. The CFC is making up their own rules again, do NOT oblige them by giving any credence to them.

I have been told this by 2 people at the CFC 1800 number. I want to believe you but I don't want my gun taken away either. Do you have any links or anything that state the # in itself is enough to go shooting?
 
as long as you have the ref # you can do as you want with the gun . it is yours . just as if you had borrowed it from the seller . as long as you have the ref # it is fine to hunt with said gun DUTCH

Yeah, one would think that people who give legal advice at the CFC should know the law, but unfortunately, they don't. They will just give you the most restricting advice they can think of from what they sort of remember, just to be safe. You actually got lucky you got the same answer twice. A few more tries and you might get a competent employee.

Ask for it in writing, and they will not be so interested in talking to you anymore.

I Agree,

Go ahead and shoot your gun. Even if some LEO "thinks" you are breaking the law and confiscates your gun, you will get it back because they can't charge you with having an un-registered gun as there is still an amnesty in effect for non-restricted guns.

I have learned very quickly that the CFC is often talking complete and utter garbage. I hate to throw all of them in the same category and pre-judge anyone, but it baffles me to think of all the retarded information I have recieved from them.
 
Check if your CFO has an email adress. Manitoba does. just email them and ask they won't know who you are if you use a temporary email service.
 
You must have your certificate with you when taking your gun shooting or hunting. A police officer can usually check very quickly if the gun is registered to you via your PAL or whatever, but it is at the discretion of the police officer whether he will confiscate your gun or not until you produce the certificate - this is the law.

Reasonable police officers will not take your gun in a situation like this and it's not a big deal as you can retrieve it when you have your certificate. I've seen this happen on a hunting trip and we were sure happy that although the certificate for one of the guns was not with the owner, they let him go but informed him that they had the authority to confiscate his gun until he produced a certificate.

I did check this out with the Firearms Act and its Regulations but this was a couple of years ago and I don't recall where to find the info in the Act or Regulations.
