Bought this Remington SPS 700 topped with a Bushnell 4200 4-16x40 with Talley rings about a month ago for paper punching and coyote hunting, decided I didn't like it the way it was (first photo) so I first snow camoed the original stock (photo 2), then decide I wanted the scope and barrel camoed so I wrapped them (photo 3). I then decided the original stock just plain sucked so I bought a Fajen stock for it at the local gunshow and stripped the camo off (photos 4+5). Of course not yet being satisfied I reworked the stock with finger grooves, defined the bottom of the grip, smoothed the ports on the forestock, and defined the comb on the buttstock, sanded the entire stock and gave it 6 hand rubbed coats of Watco cherry danish oil. I also acraglass bedded the action, already had aluminum pillars in the stock. I think I am now satisfied. I also lightened the trigger to 2 1/2 lbs. Now just need to head back to the range.

Thanks for the comps, I also liked the looks of the snow camo but not the feel of the gun with the factory stock, the new stock felt a little large in the grip area but, after adding the finger and thumb grooves, as well as I contoured it a little in the area where the thick part of your hand touches the stock by the grip, it now fits me like a glove. Was a great learning experience as I have never carved into a stock before or bedded an action, has me looking in the gun cabinet for my next victim.

I didn't want to damage the scope or barrel with paint when I did the snow camo, I work in the sign industry and just simply made my own camo pattern and printed some off on wrap vinyl used on vehicles, worked excellent and leaves no residue when removed.

Well done! I particularily like the snow camoed stock, but you definitely can't go wrong with the new stock. Those finger grooves are a nice touch as well.

Range Report

Made it out to the range today to see how it actually shoots and am pretty happy with the results. Given my hands were almost frozen and using factory ammo this 5 shot group was .914, with three in a cloverleaf. The top right shot I discounted as I was just starting my trigger squeeze when the guy on the next bench let loose with a .270 WSM and I pulled it, that is why I took 6 shots as I wanted a reasonably accurate representation of a 5 shot group. Should only get better with reloads (and warmer). I also shot another target with 5 shots as I was making some minor scope adjustments and the last two shots printed under the three cloverleaf ones when the targets are held squarely over top of each other. All said I think its a great shooter (likely better than I am capable of) and should be great to get out and test it on some coyotes.
