What would have to be done to transport some pistols from one province to another for some shooting on the weekend and then back. I have a LATT for my province. Can you store the guns in a hotel, I assume not since there would not be a safe, what about at someones house who currently has handguns and a safe. I am thinking this would be a pain in the butt. We are going to the other province for a stag and the guy over there has handguns and a range to go to etc.. I was asked to bring mine as well.

Yup I was actually told by the Alberta CFO that you must leave your guns locked in the car (in the appropriate case) when you are in the hotel..

I know I know.. Personally I feel safer with my guns in the hotel room with me, but the rules say they are still in transit and must remain in the car.

Would I leave them in the vehicle at night or in the hotel room. What about when we are not using them, could I leave them unattended in the hotel room in a locked plastic case or in the vehicle? What about the whole direct route for transport, where could I take them, does it have to be direct from my house to hotel. Would it be better to leave them at the other guys house, can I even do that.

So if you already have a LATT you still have to call the CFO for a ATT to transport to another province? What if you were going to another province for 2 weeks and wanted to bring some pistols to go shooting with some friends at a range there? Does this still work the same?

Check with your CFO as mentioned above. It differs with provinces. For example some will issue a STATT for you to transport to another province PROVIDING you are attending a match or function and can provide a letter of invitation. If you are a member at a range outside your province its no problem as they will issue your ATT to cover that. Just taking you guns along for S&Gs may not be acceptable in the eyes of your CFO

Some ATTs are valid for out-of-province matches, some aren't. All ATT's will have one or more conditions which must be adhered to. Read your ATT.

Surprise surprise, CFO's don't know how to handle this. I called my PEI CFO and NS CFO. My home is PEI. NS will issue ATT for between range and hotel nothing in between. PEI initially said they would issue from PEI to Hotel including restaurants, shopping etc... as long as everything stays locked in vehicle, now they say they don't really know and have to look into it further.

You don't need a safe. Even at home you don't need one. Minimum requirements are that it be "unloaded, rendered inoperable by using a secure locking device, and stored in a securely locked container, receptacle or room that cannot be easily be broken into."

This is probably the most accurate statement, but to be sure, check with your CFO.

PEI CFO got back to me, apparently I have to find someone in NS willing to store my firearms while I am not using them. So to summerize, PEI att gets me from my house to NS house, NS ATT gets me from NS house to range and back to house and then PEI att get me home.

Why do people complicate things. I would of asked for a statt to get to where ever I was going period. All this extra info is only complicating things. What happens now if buddy is not home when you want to go home? Make another road trip to pick up toys. Oh I need another statt to go retrieve my guns cause buddy wasn't home the last time I tried.
Did they do a background check of the buddy whose place your going to leave them at. You can see the avenues this could take.
Sorry I don't agree with another one of there "quick make up new interpretation rule".

The words "stag party" would justify a greater scrutiny, in my opinion.

(If those words were used.)

Get the NS CFO to get you a STATT for the length of your trip from Lodgings to Range.

Get PEI one for the length of your trip from your house to your lodgings in NS and back.

If they ask tell the PEI CFO the restricted firearms will be stored according to the regulations at your lodgings while not in use. Most decent hotels do have programmable safes big enough to fit a laptop if you want a safe (not required).

So are you saying I should just get the STATT and leave the firearms in the vehicle when we go to restaurants etc...what if vehicle gets broken into or I get into an accident while not on route to the range. How would I explain having the firearms with me. Apparently if I go to a store, restaurant etc... with firearms in the vehicle I would be breaking the law no matter what ATT I have.

Moving vehicle= Transport regs apply
Parked and locked vehicle= Storage regs apply
If stolen or wrecked? Then the law gets involved.
I bought a cheap range membership in a different province and had no problem getting STATT's to go back and forth.
If you can store them at your buddy's, leave certs for handguns with him
and you should be good to go.
