Transporting a Non-Res cased in the open bed of pickup truck?

Ugh, I hate to do this, but there isn't a clear answer to this question anywhere that I have found. I am planning to go to my folks cabin this week with them, and the new case I have bought for my new precision rifle is HUGE! Not to say it's really really big, but chances are it is not going to fit in the cab with me, my mom, and my dad... What I am trying to figure out since Non-Restricted's only need to be unloaded when transported; is it okay to transport cased, strapped down and with a cable lock in the action if I am never leaving the vehicle for the whole 3 hours we are going to be on the road? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Also the case can be locked with keys, and a combination, and yes, no one will be able to see what is inside of it.

So long as you don't leave it unattended it should be okay, no requirement to have it in a lockable section the vehicle while transporting it, only if you leave the vehicle.

As some other CGNers love to say, the law only says what you can't do, and it doesn't say you can't transport your gun in the bed of your truck.

You can sling it over your shoulder walk to the car or truck put it on the seat beside you and drive down the road. (unloaded of course) That is the bare min of the law. (no case needed)

Now for leaveing the car it depends.

Filling up at the pumps and paying at the pump it's legal. Pay inside you broke the law. (if it's on the seat beside you for example)

It must be placed in the trunk out of sight and in case of it won't fit or you have no trunk ie a truck. It has to be out of sight so throwing a blanket over it is legal (sounds like a bolt action just pull the bolt out done) Just lock the rifle if it's not a bolt action...(leaving the car unattended)

I stopped carrying how I transport my firearms I just do unloaded throw it in the trunk and go not like they can see through metal and I don't leave my car when transporting firearms and when I arrive they go with me so it really depends.

Now I know a firearms instructor that drives with it in the center cab of a rusted out pickup truck with the action open and a loaded magazine beside it they got pulled over and the cop took it away he went with her to the station asked for a supervisor and said I want my rifle (hunter) He explained that she was wrong go look up the law they wanted him to lock the rifle when he walked out of the station he said no give me my rifle back I broke no laws I'm going to walk down the street in downtown Vancouver (east side) with it and he did he said dressed in full camo walking to a pickup truck he got some looks but didn't care went down the road and went home he had a deer in the back as well. He leaves the action open just so people can see it's unloaded as a courtesy to the police and other people.

Just don't over think things to much. You can also call 1 800 731 4000 and speak to the CFO and ask what's legal as your unsure and want to make sure your not breaking any laws (they really don't like answering the question so hit 0 then just ask) Operator's tend to answer while other people dance around the question or say go read the law which is really a pain in the rear they don't like to answer because if you did break the law and goto court you can get off the hook because an officer said it was legal and you did due diligence.

1 thing I forgot to add take your PAL with you to show if your asked and if your not in the same car say someone else is driving it then make sure it's locked up and they can't open it that covers you as well since your following them for example.

You can loan firearms to anyone who has a PAL. You can store it in anyone's home say your moving and don't have an address setup so you ask a friend to store them who has no PAL then they just can't have access to the firearms and you explain that to the CFO (for restricted or prohibited firearms) They will give short terms to move them ect for storage there have been a few people that had to do that in the past for break ups ect.

(b) when the vehicle is not equipped with a trunk or similar compartment that can be securely locked, the non-restricted firearm is not visible from outside the vehicle and the vehicle, or the part that contains the non-restricted firearm, is securely locked.
(3) If, in a remote wilderness area that is not subject to any visible or otherwise reasonably ascertainable use incompatible with hunting, an individual is transporting a non-restricted firearm in an unattended vehicle that is not equipped with a trunk or similar compartment that can be securely locked, and the vehicle or the part of it that contains the non-restricted firearm cannot be securely locked, the individual shall ensure that the non-restricted firearm
(a) is not visible; and
(b) is rendered inoperable by a secure locking device, unless the individual reasonably requires the non-restricted firearm for the control of predators.
http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/sor-98-209/page-4.html In a case should be considered Not visible BUT it depends on the cop who stops you and or the criminal who lifts your case while at the gas station ... lock the case, lock the gun or action and strap it down under a tarp so no prying eyes can see it would be a safer bet imo .

To answer your direct question, I will provide you will an direct answer. Under conditions described above, yes.

I carry mine in a hardcase in the bed all the time. Just throw it in the cab at gas stations, eateries, grocery store, etc.... As long as its locked up while unattended you're good to go.

WOW! This is great information I am actually surprised so many answers. Also Hazard4 rocks I saw their shot show video like last week and now really want the Poncho Villa poncho. Thanks for all of your help guys!
