Got into this discussion the other day with a buddy of mine who is from Toronto Ontario born and raised. He said he bought a truck to put the deer in the box so no one could see it when transporting it home. I laughed because back home in Nova Scotia we use to strap the deer to the hood of the truck. Never really questioned why because thats how it was always done in my neck of the woods. I assume it was to show off your "trophy" leaving the hunt.

Does anyone anywhere other than N.S. do this? If I take down my first Ontario buck this year he is going on the hood of the truck just like we always did back home. I'll bet I get a lot of weird looks here in Toronto... lmao!

(or is there a law against this? I better check that out first)

Just a few years ago, here in NB, it was law, you had to transport your deer, moose, bear in open view at all times, now once you put your tag on your game you can transport it any way you want

HA HA

My buddy from NS did the same thing with his first Alberta deer, put it on the hood of his Cavalier and drove around town. A dozen years later people still laugh about it (sorry mumptia, they are not laughing with you!!)

People here were just bewildered. If got caught having ### with the carcass they would have thought him no more stranger than they did for driving around with it on the hood of his car.

So that must have been it then. I guess N.S. required the hunter to display which is why we (my dad, uncles etc) put it on the hood of the truck.

Well I'm still going to put mine on the hood of the truck. Its like carrying on a family tradition... lmao! Hope no one throws rocks at my truck... haha

Good for him! You just cant take the N.S. out of the man! If it wasn't so discraceful I'd put an Ottawa Senators jersey/hat on the buck and drive past the Air Canada Center when the leafs are playing.....

NS doesn't require you to put the animal out in plain sight. I think, from hearing my grandfather talk about it that it was done because a lot of people used cars for travel and didn't want to mess up the trunk, so throw it on the hood and off you go.

I have always wondered if it was just people around here that do this, or if it was done everywhere. I used to see alot of it when I was younger but not so much now.

Even though I'm from N.S. I always thought it was dumb to see someone driving around with a deer on the hood of a truck with a perfectly good pickup box empty. I dont mind so much much when you see it with a car though. Because noone really wants a gutted deer dripping in their trunk. My friend actually brought his first deer out on the hood of a Honda Civic hatch. It was quite a load.

I have also heard stories of the people who shouldnt be allowed to go hunting because they drive around town for a couple days Showing it off and then its spoiled for eating by then.

Now thats just nuts. Why would anyone leave a deer on their hood for days? Man that must have stank!

I have a Jeep YJ 4x4 with 33" Mud tires. Thats probably what I'll take into the bush with me since my truck has my company name all over it. I just realized it would be bad business to have a deer on the hood of the truck.

I was moose hunting near Cochrane a couple of years ago and saw a guy, a local I assume, driving around town for at least four days with the head of a big bull tied to the front of his Jeep. Not just the rack, the entire head, as if it were a shoulder mount or something.

After about ten seconds of thinking "nice bull" I spent the rest of the week thinking "what an a**hole!" every time I saw him.

Why do you need to display your deer on the hood?. ##### issues?

Ditto. I don't hide it in any way (come to work with the boat, dog and decoys in the bed of the truck) but I realize that dead animals are distressing to some people (even those without firm stances on hunting and guns). My deer kills are placed in the bed of the truck. If someone chooses to come over and look while I'm at the liquor store buying celebratory beer, so be it. To have the thing hanging off the roof is going to do more harm to hunting than good though.

Don't leave my gut piles in the ditch either.

So unless the law dictates it OR you just want to push people's buttons, why bother?
