I might be meeting up with my brother in BC (I'm in Ontario) this fall for a moose hunt. Has anyone had any experience transporting rifles with Air Canada or Westjet? I would like to take my own gun, but there is the option of using one of his and save the hassle of transporting.

Little hassle. Proper case, unloaded, separate from ammunition, declare on check in, no more than 5kgs of commercially packaged ammunition in checked luggage. Have your licence and registration in case you are asked.

Air Canada will charge you $50 extra in each direction for the firearms.
A fellow I hunt with every year had his guns bumped by Air Canada to a later flight. He had to borrow one for the first few days until his finally arrived.
WestJet has never been a problem for him.

AC are a pack of dinks. Westjet won't hassle you. In a locked hard case and unloaded is all they want. Of course, ammo in your other suitcase.
I have flown Westjet and AC with firearms. No issue with either except that AC charges double what Westjet does. $50 for WestJet, $100 for AC.
Just declare it on check in, fill out a form, ammo in a separate bag and you're good to go. I used a hard case and made sure it was locked with machine screws and nyloc nuts so that someone would need tools to open it (me included-don't forget your wrenches) if I wasn't around. Plus my case was sort of lower end on the quality scale and I didn't trust the latches to stay shut after seeing how they treat the luggage in airports. Everything arrived safe and sound and on the same flight every time I've done it. And I've done it more than most....

Whoops, forgot to specify, it is $50 or $100 for every flight-depending on which airline you choose. If you buy a round trip ticket, it is $50x2. Not just $50 on check in....
