some of my friends and i are shooting trap now going on two summers and all we have to shoot from is the 16 yard line.how good do you have to be before you shoot handicap?do you have to get 25 straight everytime before you try handicap and if so ,at what yardage do you shoot at first?i shoot 24 and 25 regularly and just when i think i got it figured out ,i'll shoot a 20 or 22.i got alot to learn so my ears are wide open.

at our club you shoot handicap right away based on your squads last week score, we shoot one round at 16 and then whatever handicap we are assigned for the second round(i couldn't even begin to tell you how that is workeed out by the way)...

Handicap

Handicap trapshooting in competition(ATA) goes like this....Males 18yrs of age or older Start at the 20 yd. line. and move back when they win a shoot or score 96 or more. The shooters all have cards which are punched for"earned yardage" and all scores are kept on computer at ATA hdqtrs., shooters must shoot from their earned yardage or are penalized(banned from comp. for a year or more.) Punches can be for as little as 1/2yd. or 2 or 3 yards if you shoot well in a large tournament. The ATA has a web page which explains it all in more detail....When shooting handicap your technique, chokes, etc. don't have to change much until you work your way back to 24 or more yards, then leads change including leads for hight!! This is the trap event where the little guy can win the big shooters money as starters shoot from 20 and the pros from 27.....that is also why there is much more money riding on handicap events including calcuttas!! Starting trapshooters would do better if they practised handicap and doubles more...and less singles!!

Take a step or two back and try a shot from the 18 yard line. There is very little difference between shooting at the 16 or 18 yard lines. There is even less difference between the 18 and 19 yard lines, etc. The only thing you need to be sure of is that your choke will throw a pattern all the way out to where you are hitting the birds. From the back of the sidewalk, a full choke and some 7 1/2 shot will do the trick.

The human brain is a wonderful computer and will calculate the lead for you without the need for conscious thought. Technique becomes a little more important as the distances increase, small errors from 16 yards become larger at 27 yards.

There is a neat little game whereby everyone on the line shoots one shot, then everyone steps back 2 yards and shoots the next shot. After 5 shots you are at the back of the field. Everyone then changes stations and the shooting marches forward for the next 5 shots, and so forth until the round is finished. By changing the shooting position by only a couple of yards at a time, it is easy to adjust to the new target presentation. Try it.

This is the same for PITA. I am at 20yrds still. I practice handicap more than anything since in competition that is where the money is :)
