Trap Semi-Auto Ejecting Too Far

Hi all,

I recently got a new beretta A400 Xcel (blue receiver) for clays. I shoot it really well and like it, however it ejects shells directly into whoever is on my right which is discourteous in trap so I’d like to put that to an end

Right now I’m using the rubber band trick but would like something more permanent. I know there is the T&S Clip on catcher, as well as the wire one however is like to avoid putting anything on the outside of the gun where possible. Also, I don’t reload so I’m looking for a deflector more than a catcher

In my research I found a gunsmith in the US that adds a bump to the barrel extension to make shells eject downwards. Does anyone know of a Canadian (preferably in BC) gunsmith that can do the same? Any other ideas I might be overlooking?

From all accounts it is something that can be done at home but I am not handy with things like that and lack tools and space to do it myself... just in case anyone was going to suggest I do it myself.

My Remington 1100 , my 870 WingMaster and my Browning Sporting clays all ejected the spent shells to the right and would bounce off the fellow shooter as would the guy to my left when they shot auto would bounce off of me or my gun.
No big deal, it if it bothers you continue with the wrapped rubber band around your gun at the ejection port.

That is a violaton of the rules of ATA and PITA trap and very discourteous as well. The OP has the right idea trying to control his empties. You need to find someone to install a deflector stud but I don't know who that would be.

Yes; luckily the first time I took the shotgun out the gentleman to my right was very understanding. After the round I apologised and explained it was my first time shooting this particular gun, and he was friendly and said it was no problem; but I know I can’t rely on that and shouldn’t expect it at every game

I’ll call some local gunsmiths after the thanksgiving weekend and see if I find any leads, but hopefully the CGN collective knowledge has a name I can chase down

I shoot an A400 Xcel as well and I just use the T&S Shell catcher. Really not a hassle and works great. Literally 1 second to add or remove it.

Good to know it works well and is no hassle; seems more and more that that is the route I’ll need to take. I just was looking for something that wasn’t visible from the outside and could still work with doubles etc... I think having a shotgun that ejects to your feet is ideal in most situations (the shells right now are literally landing 6 feet to my right)

Ha ha, no big deal... unless your the guy getting hulls in the face!

Definitely against the ATA rules to interfere with another shooter and you are correct in getting it addressed. T&S shell catcher as previously suggested but a rubber band around the action will work until you can secure one.

I believe that a competent gunsmith can weld a "knock down pin" on the barrel extension.

No big deal? Naa not at all. It’s lovely having hulls bounce off you while you’re trying to remain focused on your next target not to mention really awesome when someone bounces their hulls off your mint superposed leaving a nice white mark in the finish on top of the comb of your stock!!!! Stick to “back 40 trap” with your manual thrower. Attitudes like yours belong there, not on a club’s range.

After a day or two of that nonsense, most clubs would ask you not to return until you have resolved the issue.

I have spent some time at a local dedicated gun club in Richmond on Sidaway Road and watch Trap shooters of all types and skill set.
They shoot auto loaders O/U , SxS and pump action shot guns and one guy with a Browning twelvette and nobody bothers them while they are shooting a round of trap.
Competition might be another story though.
Sounds like the op wants to have something added to his gun for the sake of ...

Not a shotgun, but one of my SKS's launches spent shells up and parabolically predictably (a good 50%+) up and to the right landing on the head or person sitting 4 shooting bays to my right. I warn people now and maniacally laugh my ass off (usually they do too) as spent casing land on them again and again and again hahahaha...… I love that gun its such a jerk lol

Agreed on all counts. My mini-14 kicks brass about 15-20ft to the right of me. When I’m at the range with it if I can’t get the far right end of line I wait until it’s available so I’m not bouncing brass off other shooters and their guns & gear.

I have the a 400 xcel sporting also. some models won't accommodate the t+s shell catcher. I believe the early production a400 will accept the clip on shell catcher. mine does not however so I bought a Birchwood Casey and it works great. one other option I was going to try was a blue zip tie over the ejection port to deflect the shell at my feet..... my a300 never used to throw the shells far..... the 400 does tho...
