Trap/skeet gun newbie

I just purchased a Citori for my new adventure into trap/skeet shooting. I have a couple of questions regarding the nomenclature of this gun. First of all, without taking it to the range, is there anyway that I can tell how it's set up (which barrel fires first). Also I have dry fired it a few times, however only one barrel/pin fires, and when I break open the action, the bottom ejector works. How does the 2nd barrel fire? Does it use any blowback from the first round?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Citoris use an inertial reset mechanism in the trigger, so that when the gun recoils from your first shot, it will automatically switch to the other barrel (you can try this out by using an unloaded shotgun; break it open to #### it, close it up, pull the trigger to fire one barrel, then give the shotgun a thump on the butt to simulate recoil, and then the second barrel will be ready to fire). If you ever want to fire the other barrel first, the tang safety can also be pushed from side to side, exposing either an "O" (over) or "U" (under) for whichever one you want to fire first. HTH.

What sort of chokes do you have for it? You'll probably want to experiment a little bit to see which ones will be best for the game you're shooting at any given time.

The bottom barrel usually fires first, which given your observation about the ejectors it would be safe to say that is what your gun is doing. The recoil sets the upper barrel and after the first shot the second one or top barrel will fire. Carefull about dry firing it can dammage your gun. You should also have a selector switch/safety on the gun so that you can choose what barrel fires first. O - would indicate the upper barrel and U - would indicate the bottom barrel. There is probably an S too that indicates that the safety is on. Hope this helps.

If you are using snap caps it would be safer.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies. Now this makes total sense. Yeah, I thought the dry firing isn't great, so only did it a couple of times.
Thank you again.
PS. Can anyone ID what model Citori this is??

Citori Model

Agreed with m12man. Looks like a lightning field model with adjustable comb and a spacer to lenghten at the pad so likely stock was shortened at one time.

I agree with REM3200 and m12man, it looks like a Lightning field gun.The adjustable comb looks like a good job. My first trap gun was a Browning Superposed Field gun that had an after market butt with adjustable comb. It worked well for me and I hope yours breaks a ton of targets.

Now I have soooooo many questions, but for now I'll only bother you with one. The butt pad is pretty worn, and I was thinking of replacing it with a newer one. I know there's a few threads on here regarding the recoil pads, however I was wondering if the aftermarket ones can be applied since the concensus is the stock has been cut. I really don't want to replace the stock as I feel it fits me well, plus I love the grain.
Also I'm trying to convince my father to try clays. He's a little nervous around guns...even though he has his PAL, and when we shot with an old Savage SxS, (no recoil pad), I think it wrecked him of the sport. Any suggestions as to a good aftermarket pad, and shell purchase to reduce his discomfort? I don't want to scare him away from the sport as we both got our PAL's together as a father/son thing.

Thanx again

You members are great!!

Hi Puppypappa1,

A good recoil pad to use if you have access to one is Kick-eez pads, they are soft and in demand for clay target guns.

Welcome to the sport of clay target shooting and best of luck to you.

Best regards,
Sam

Recoil Pad

In regard to a pad you can't go wrong with the KICK-EEZ and I will also give high marks to the Pachmayr pads. Since you indicate that your going to shoot trap and skeet I'd go with a flat faced pad rather than a curved trap style.

To cover them all off you may want to give some consideration to a Pachmayr Sporting Clays pad which is essentially a skeet style pad with a hard insert so it won't hang up on clothing when mounting the gun.

If you go and shoot trap and skeet it's a good chance the sporting clays bug will grab you.

Go to www.brownells.com and have a look at the pads available.

Regards,

I've been a user and proponent of Kick-Eeze pads for years. However,I recently tried a Limbsaver pad on one of my guns and now the Kick-Eeze pads are coming of the others and Limbsavers are going on.

Its sounds like I'll probably try the limbsaver slip on, and see how that goes. The gun came with Skeet, Full, and Modified Chokes. Can't wait to get to the club.
