Hey all, I just tried trap for the first time yesterday, and I had an amazing time. I have a 20 ga. full choke 870 Wingmaster, 2 3/4", and am wondering if it will suffice until I pick up a 12 ga. Any tips? Shot sizes?

My son I shoots a 12ga with 7/8oz of #8 1/2's or #8's at 16yrds. Thats basicly a 20ga load in a 12ga hull. I shoot the same load, it works fine. Stay away from #7 1/2'a though as with the smaller shot charge your pattern density wont be the greatest.

Tim,
Have you tried the 7/8 ounce load using 7 1/2 shot or do you just like the numbers that 8 or 8 1/2 give you.I've got 7 1/2 and 8 shot and as soon as I can get a bushing I'm going to load some up and try them out.It sounds like you really prefer the smaller shot. We're down to one sporting goods store in a town of 80,000 and he doesn't(and won't) carry Hornady or P/W stuff(which I use)and he won't even carry MEC for that matter. He does carry RCBS and those bushings work but I'll have to wait for a minimum of 8 weeks for it to arrive.I think that it's time to machine one for myself. The guy seemed kind of bitter that we buy our compoments direct tso as to save a bit of money.I tried to explain that if I don't get my components direct,I won't need the bushing because I won't be able to afford to shoot.

I really like the smaller shot in the light loads. Actually even when shooting 1 1/8 oz I very rarely use 7 1/2's. We shoot quick shells so there's plenty of energy and I'm a firm beleiver in pattern density breaks targets. I've picked up to many tagrte off the ground that have 3 or 4 or even more holes in them yet still didnt break. I wont take the chance of just hitting the target with one or 2 pellets only. 7/8oz with 7 1/2's does work. It's the standard International trap load when loaded with plated shot. If useing standard lead you have to keep your chokes tight though especialy if your a little slower at shooting. With #8's though an IM choke at 16yrds works well. With 8 1/2's you have a higher pellet count than 1 1/8oz of 7 1/2's so you can even get by with a Mod choke and still have a plenty dense pattern.
