Trapdoor Springfield w/scope - Impressive!

Either you're tooting your own horn or this is something you found somewhere? Either way it's a nice update mod. Definetly complicates the loading but as long as time isn't an issue it's a sweet way to update the old classic.

but its Compleatly wrecks that nice rifles looks!
Them Springfeilds are one of the nicest looking rifles (Antique) out there.
And unless your Vision impaired that Scope mount looks worse than anything the Russians even made.
I would not put that scope mount on any of my antique Rifles.

I keep hearing about this -bannermans- and how they had many many Civil war artifacts for sale "rifles,pistols etc.."

Must have been quite a outfit.

The scope isnt my thing, but wow the general condition of that rifle is impressive!

Butt ugly but unique and not period looking somebody spent alot of time destroying a old gun but when it belongs to you do what you want I have some old beauties and if my eyes started to fail me as I get older I would do it to
 
Def. one of the ugliest, unnecessary things done to a fine old rifle, would be much nicer with Malcolm style mounts on the barrel, if optics are required.

Looks to me like a neat way of doing what was done without modifying the gun - assuming that the forend was cut some other time - seems like two screws remove the scope and you're back to iron sights. Maybe I'm missing some other mods to the action area??
 
That's what it looks like to me as well. Not sure how consistent the scope will be with the mounting on the stock. But as you say if it had been previously "ruined" by shortening the fore end then an additional couple of holes in the stock to set in something like brass threaded wood'serts would not reduce the value of the stock by any bigger an amount.

I'm likely in the same boat as the owner of this gun. When I wear my distance glasses my short range sight gets fuzzy enough that I can't aim with iron sights. So since my distance sight for handgun shooting isn't all THAT bad I just live with a slightly fuzzy target. But for long distance/small target rifle shooting I can't get away with this trick and I foresee all my long guns having scopes even if just low power ones for the vision issue. Although I'd like to try a peep sight with smaller aperatures. The small aperature provides a tight iris feature that cuts out a lot of my astigmatism issue and suddenly the target is far, far more clear.
 
Gun mods

Actually, looks to me that the mount is attached at the screws holding the saddle ring loop, so likely no new holes at all! Damnsmartfeller as far as I am concerned.
 
Those trap doors are many in numbers, and a lot of hunters in the old days used them.

I'm sure someone had developed a scope mount for them already, maybe back in the 1920's or 30's?. But none the less, the scope mount in the posted video is interesting and neat. I wonder how much better the old gun can group with a target load backed by a scope?
