Traping Grouse

I am going to land survival training soon and from speaking to my freinds there is a lot of grouse (prarrie chickens) around the area.I was thinking that eating them would be a far better idea than living off of candys for 3 days. Any one know of a good resource on how to catch them? I would love to bring a small shot gun or even a sling shot. But we only get snare wire. Any ideas would be great!

I think he means ruffed grouse? My dad called them "prairie chickens" too.......

If your course is in September, and you have a license, you can probably kill grouse with a stick. If its out of season, Id set up some rabbit snares (if its legal where you are).

I don't think the local CO will give a rats as* if you are on a survival course or not. Kill a bird out of season and chances are you will pay for it. I'd be careful on that one. Don't like to see guys get into trouble.

Just my lousy 2 cents worth.

If you do set up snares for rabbit, Ive had good success with a 10" loop diameter about 8 " off the ground (from the bottom of the loop).
 
A long pole with a noose, rocks, or a few 2ft, 1.5" throwing sticks work well. You'd be surprised what you can down with a good throwing stick.
Male grouse ruffed grouse this time of year like to thump on their favourite fallen log. Locate them by the thumping, they'll run away but will return in 20min if you hide quietly, camouflage with leaves dirt/debris. Then use your pole snare, place open snare on the log etc.
 
Thanks for the advice, HD I wouldent think of going after those. I do believe that they are ruffled grouse. As far as being out of season, I am not too sure about that, I know a couple of guys on the last course got rabbits in snares. I dont know if there is a season for them. I will be sure to check the local regs and I will also check with the powers that be before I go killing anything. I was just thinking that fresh grouse would be much tastyer than those Jube jubes that you have for three days.
