Trapping Advice

My 15 year old nephew has always been interested in the outdoors, and now wants to begin trapping (more than the gophers and squirrels he's done so far). I was thinking of picking him up a couple #120's so he can go after marten or weasels or rats.

Anyways, what brand should I be going with? A neighbour of mine who does some trapping recommended Belisle... What's the general consensus on those? I have no experience when it comes to trapping, it was never really my thing.
 
Belisle are about as good as it gets. One thing to check on trap brands is if they are on the approved humane list by species. Not being on the list doesn’t make them bad necessarily, but can make them illegal. The testing costs money, the Canadian market is small and many companies never bothered.
 
Make sure he doesn’t get in trouble, up here you need a license, then you need to apprentice under some one and then if you have the money and want to keep at it you need to buy a trap line and that ain’t cheap, avg $80-90k

Yeah, he'd need a license, which I'm sure he'll go get at some point. My dad (his grandpa) has been teaching him some skinning stuff, and I have a couple cousins around there who grew up with trapping. I think he'd just be sticking to trapping casually on my parents quarter (like muskrat and weasel mostly).

There is a guy over in the Outdoors Alberta web site who has a couple of traps in their EE that might fit the bill .
Meaning they should be trap line legal for Canada (humane) that is.
Just tossing that out there.

dam beaver is good place to buy traps. Sometimes has some used ones and reduce price. Iam sure in area your at that there would be a few people that would give him a few pointers
 
I used to think that the one hand spring compressors that look like a caulking gun were a joke; until I actually tried one this fall trapping problem beaver. So cilvilized and when you’re wearing a Belisle as jewelry the one hand operatation starts looking pretty good.

They not only hurt but are dangerous.

I was stupid enough to get both of my hands (fingers from both hands) caught in a 330 when I started trapping. Luckily the trap was not attached to a tree and I was able to get out of the woods and get help ....

As new shooters need to learn about firearms security .... if you want to handle these bigger traps ... you also need to learn about trap security .... !!!!
There are definite security rules to follow.

I tried all kinds of brands for conibear traps .... but I am sticking to Belisle nowadays. They are just a bit more refined ... and it makes a difference.

Belisle is the way to go, they have great spring safety.
A set of small setters with the 120s he will be set.
In Alberta he can get a resident liesnce for private land that he has written permission on
 
In Saskatchewan he’ll need the humane trappers course to get a license because of his age. Us old guys got grandfathered but the cut-off was a long time ago.
He can get a free youth trapping licence with his youth licence but for that he needs his hunters safety as well.

I'll pass that along to my sister. I figured he'd need a trappers course, which I'm sure he'll be all excited about. Doesn't like exams, but he is a keen learner about anything animals

I do have some 330 traps and all the things for sale on the Alberta Outdoorsmen Forum. If you are interested let me know. Safety’s and trap setters included.
