Hi everyone,
I just got back from a month vacation down in Australia. Had a great time and saw a lot of great sights and wildlife.
I thought the trapshooters here would enjoy hearing about my experience at the Western Australia Gun Club (WAGC).
I'm not a golfer so golf wasn't on my agenda of things to do in Australia. Fishing was a thought but then I decided to search around the internet and see if any shooting opportunities were available. I totally lucked out with the WAGC!!!
It's located just out of Perth, by far the best facility I've ever seen and will probably ever get the opportunity to shoot at, and it's members include the same quality type guys I've met at all the clubs in the Fraser Valley so far.
I was invited to a DTL Carnival (basically a prize shoot). There were 7 events over 2 days. Fees were comparable to what our PITA fees are but there were some major event differences!
My first event was a 20 target double shot points. In this event you get 2 shots at a target, you score 3 points for a first shot hit, 2 for a second, and 0 for a loss. I should add here that the club had a couple nice loaner guns for me to use and I selected a Beretta 686 E (I normally shoot a Beretta 391 PT).
You get a one shot warm up when you get on the line, then you take your first shot, open your gun and after the shooter to your right shoots, you move half way to him... then when the guy next to him shoots, you move to the next pad and the fellow you replaced moves half way to the next station. That's right, you move after each shot! Also, it was hard to remember to take 2 shots, I did ok though and finished with 55/60 points in the first event. I was placed in B class based on the PITA numbers I showed them I had shot this year.
Next event was 25 target single shot, I tanked and finished with 15/25.
The 3rd event was a 25 target points double shot and I shot well hitting 23 with first shot and 2 with my second for 73/75. I finished tied for second in B class and had to shoot off with 2 other guys. I lost out and finished 4th...., even forgot to fire my second shot when I missed the first!
I shot up and down the remaining events, 29/30, 39/50, 69/75.... still not bad with a different gun and all new games. I should also add they moved me to A class for sunday as my shooting was generally good saturday. Sunday's last event was a handicap and top prize was a Miruku O/U Sporting. I didn't come close but it was fun to watch the shootoff as it went on for half an hour!
There were close to 100 guys there at the event. It was well organized and our entry fees even included a steak BBQ on sunday! (it was awesome
).
Winners in each class recieved a Sash and prizes.
I was surprised to see there is a strong shooting community in Australia. I was also able to visit a gun store and it was busy just like the Vancouver stores I've been to.
Here's some pics,
