Travelling to S. Africa

Hello all, I'm headed to S. Africa next year and am looking into the legalities of carrying a weapon for self defense while there. If anyone has experience or insight I would appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks,

David

There are some regions that have very bad crime rates. Other regions do not. The South Africans have rules about handgun ownership and carry. You will have to contact their Canadian embassy to get the rules.

I recall this question coming up before the DCRA rifle team went to South Africa a decade ago. You should ask the South African shooting community, IPSC and IDP if you want the other side of the official story.

Unless your planning on being there for an extended period of time, it's not worth your while.

Get your minder to drive that 'Rover like he stole it and dont allow him to stop at any red lights/roundabouts. You'll be just fine.;)

If you are going with a group you'll be fine. Just don't go out on your own or go out at night unless your with your travel group. I highly doubt you will get a licence to carry a gun in SA not because your a tourist but because the government is very slow you think the government here takes it time with paper work you ain't seen nothing yet. Trust me been there and done that.
Where are you going? I would not mind to go back and see the family again but definitely wont want to live there :(

A beautiful country and very friendly people. There is plentry of crime in the large urban centers, but generally at night. Stay away from the Townships(Alexandra, Soweto, etc) unless you have a "local" guide who will show you around and introduce you. Turist locations are generally safe.

I’m from SA. The gun laws are very strict and there is no way you will be able to legally carry a gun there as a tourist. It’s difficult these days even as a citizen.

You will just have to be street smart. Stay in the tourist areas. Don’t wonder off the beaten path. Don’t go into the townships. Try not to look like a tourist and don’t flash cash and cameras around. Don’t go out at night. Be careful drawing money at banks or ATM’s. Maintain a high level of situational awareness.

If you get robbed/hijacked be compliant. Don’t look them in the face as they think this means you will give the police a description. Move slowly, these guys are jittery and their finger is on the trigger.

If you are driving also be cautious of taxis and people on the road that do not follow the rules. If you are pulled over or go through a road block there is a good chance that the new corrupt police service will try to solicit a bribe.

Take out private medical insurance and keep the card in your wallet so if something happens you will be sent to a private and not a Government hospital.

The best way to be safe is to meet some of the locals. Saffas are generally very friendly people and will treat you well. Canadians are well liked. Locals can give you some advice as to where to go, what to do etc.

If you follow this advice I’m sure you will be OK and have a great time.

It’s a strange country, it has the best and the worst of everything in one place. It will stay in your heart long after you have left.

PM me with any questions.

I hope you have a good trip, let us know how it went when you get back

Frankly

You're a decade late (and about a million dollars short).

Good luck. (You're going to need it.)

With the saddest of ironies, it actually may be easier for him.

From the experiences of the guys who visited SA for the last IPSC world shoot held there;

1) Getting a vistor permit for the gun (for competition) isn't terribly hard.
2) A condition of the permit is it must be with the licence holder at all times.
3) It's a hell of a lot easier getting this than the 18 month-4 year wait for a citizens gun licence.

There may be certain exceptions for hunters or competition events but not for self defence which is what I believe is what Blury wants.

But who knows, I have been away for a number of years and the whole gun registration system has gone off the rails. I have a gun transfer that I have been waiting over 7 years for the SA Police to process.
