Treading a Barrel

What diameter is needed to thread a barrel for 5/8x24 for a brake? I have .655. Are there other brake sizes suitable for .308?

That's pretty tight. 9/16-24 is another that is used on light barrels. That's .5625

I guess what I need to know is thread depth of .20 enough or do I need to forget about it.

It can be done by a skilled hand but I would prefer more shoulder with the 9/16x24 thread. It depends what style of brake you wish to use and if you want to remove it easily.

With thin wall barrels you always risk of "Bell Mouthing".

9/16 would probably be the best option as mentioned to have a suitable shoulder. Ideally shortening the barrel would be better.
