Tree Stand - 2 Man - Advice Needed

Hello.

I will be hunting deer in SW Ontario this November with my 13 year old son.

We have some bush, so we will be hunting on our property, and setting up a tree stand.

As he is an apprentice, I need a tree stand that supports 2 people. I can buy one, but I would prefer to just build one myself and save the $250 ++

I have an aluminum extension ladder already that can get us to the stand, so it is just the platform that I need to build.

So, any advice or links to plans on building a 2 man tree stand would be appreciated.

Also, any input on location, or any other things to consider with the stand are welcome.

it is not a great pic but these are the ones we make you can very easy fit two we do it all the time and thy are very cheap to make i can make two for 60$ or less very very safe DUTCH

Wooden Skids are free, and generally pretty solid.
Find a few of those.
As for location, you just need to do a bit of scouting and look for some busy deer runs a few weeks before season opens.

Good thing health-care is free too...if you are using skids. ;)

Do yourself, and your son a favour and purchase (or weld one) a proper stand. And use safety harnesses. :)
 
If you live close to the states Wal-Mart usually has good prices. Or use 2 strap ons ( if you already have them) in a suitable location.
 
Let the 'net be your friend. Search for images of tree stands, or plans for tree stands. You will be surprised what features attract your attention.
 
Our camp has 4 or 5 stands, and all are home made, and all but one hold 2 people. After 5 or so years we have never had any problems with them. Of course we check them out every year to make sure they are all safe, and maybe add a screw or two, and sometimes replace a board.

Start with a solid base (I believe ours are 4ft X 4 ft) and build it so it can be built at home, then taken in the woods and assembled.

The idea of having a two seater stand at first was so the younger kids could sit with someone when they were just kids( 8yrs+) but then we realized it was also fun for two adults when one of us had already harvested a deer and could no longer hunt, they could still go out and enjoy a hunt with someone who has not yet filled their tag.

Here is a pic of the smaller one man stand. LOL I ran out of brown paint to finish it off that day, but now its all painted up. The two man ones are built the same. Keep in mind these are not 25 feet up in the air.

Hey All.

Thanks for the input, and the pics are great. Keep them coming if you have them!

I will likely try to build my own. Need to make a decision on location, then build according to the tree.

Any input regarding location appreciated as well. I have a pretty good idea where the deer are walking through the trails, but any input to distance, height, amount of coverage needed, camo, etc, etc.
 
Couple of things to consider on location;

1) What will you be shooting ( rifle, bow, ???
2) Is the stand in a location where you can get to it from different directions depending on wind.
3) Establish clear shooting lanes
4) Get it installed as soon as possible depending on regulations so the animals get accustomed to it
5) make sure it doesn't squeek and make sounds if you move to shoot or stand up
As for height I generally use 15 ft or so

6) Finally be sure to install a heater, fully stocked fridge, and TV for when the action is slow:)
