Hey Guys,

Im looking at purchasing a tree stand for this fall hunts and am kinda lost as what to buy?? Anybody have any pointers as to which stand to buy and what to look for in a stand.

Cheers!!

if you want to have a few stands to hunt out of it would be best to make them yourself then you can have the features you want. if it is a stand you are leaving in a tree the whole deer season or whatever you are hunting i would suggest one with larger base, but if you are packing it into your spot everytime you go i would go with a lighter stand thats is easier to carry.

I use the Baby Gorilla... I like the chain, NOT the strap types... Had Rivers Edge stands, they got stolen two years ago... I went to the baby gorilla cause I now carry them in EACH and EVERY time I hunt... Friggen expensive lesson...

Cheers
Jay

We use the Big Game Boss XL because they are big and inexpensive ($111 from SIR). Our stands are all on private land so we aren't worried about theft (unlike Jay's situation). We hang 'em before bow season (Aug) and pull them out after rifle season (dec) and have never had any problem with the straps coming loose.

got a couple of baby gorillas... great. I'd like more room for my feet, but cheapness makes up for the space loss.

My hunting partner got his (gorilla model) stolen this fall :(... it was locked with a cable lock but the flugers cut it and all the tree steps were gone too.

Anyway, I went for multiple stands...to increase interception potential (and it keeps paying off :))

BUY GOOD LOCKS!!!!!!!!!

Scott; The most expensive stand you can afford is probably your best idea. I know the nay sayers are going to jump all over that but I have tried alot of different stands and log probably around 200 hours a year in tree stands. I think(and this is just my 2 cents) the best stands built and the nicest to carry are the lone wolf stands. They are the only stand to my knowledge with an absolute 1 piece forged platform and seat. The climbers have a great size platform and are cast to hold your bow right in the floor. The hang on types also hold your bow but have alot smaller floor. The whole thing is put together with teflon bushing and is guarantee'd not to squeak. The only sucky thing about lone wolf is the seat, it is a little on the small side. If that's a problem I have a baby grand that I love sitting in. This is my favorite all day stand. Also has a very large floor and giant thick seat. Only bad thing is it's welded. I have 8 lone wolf hang on stands and had 2 climbers but sold a buddy one and have only 1 baby grand. I also have probably 10 home made jobs but would not rec. that as they are always to heavy and not insured!!

Being primarilly a ground hunter, I tried my first tree stand last year. I bought a huge Big Game two person stand, though only one person uses it at a time.. we like the extra room it provides.

Anyways, this thing is quite big and quite high (16 feet) so you get a really good vantage. It is tough as hell to put up though. I tried by myself but had to give up as it an impossible one man job. Even with two of us, we still had to bring another ladder and put a pulley high in the tree to hoist this thing up.

But once it's up, its up. And it works great. Lots of room and very sturdy. I will be tweaking it quite a bit this year by adding little things that will help such as a cover material around the whole blind, some sort of gun/bow holder, a little umbrella for the rain etc...

This is a good unit, it's expensive but I think its alot more sturdy that 95% of whats out there.

I also have a Tree Lounge that was given to me that I have not tried yet. They are supposedly the most comfortable tree stand there is.

I have used several and now use only a Summit climbing stand, the Bullet backpacker I think it's called. Weighs 18 pounds, and easily packed a couple miles. They're more expensive, but work excellent.

Borrow one & try.

I made my own climbing stand. It is a little on the heavy side but it is rock solid and comfortable.

saskhunter is correct...buy the best one you can with lots of leg room and a decent sized platform.....you will spend more time in it than you think if it is comfortable. Cheap stands are a nightmare. Uncomfortable is one thing, uncomfortable and 16ft above ground is a recipe for disaster.

Get an excellent body harness that straps your chest and groin area too.....A belt that just goes around your waist will simply cut you in half if you fall.....accidents happen so its better to have one good setup than five lousy ones.......

Hornhunter: looks like you did a pretty good job on that stand, the power pole looks like it has seen some action too! Just wondering if you got into a little quieter part of town if you wouldn't have more luck? LMAO

Sorry I couldn't resist!!

I mostly night hunt so it is quiet in this part of town by then and the street lite works as a great spot lite.

I just have to rely on my calling ability a little more that you fellows that live in the country.

It is all about cutbacks you know!!:p
