I've got a few mags that while they are still serviceable, the blueing id starting to fade and they're is spot rusting. Someone suggested today that instead of reblueing the mags I just strip them down to bare metal and spray paint them.

My question is will the painted mags hold up as well if I paint them?
Secondly do I need to primer the mags before I paint them ?
and finally, If the mags are painted, do I still put a thin film of oil around them like on regular metal parts? Can't hurt I guess.

While I'm at it gents. Can I use a little steel wool and some solvent to see if I can buff some of the rust out of the better mag with out wrecking the blueing ?

Steel wool and oil will do a nice job of cleaning up minor rust spots. If you end up with visible patches of "white" metal, you can usually cover them nicely with a cold blue product. Brownells Oxpho Blue is one of the best in my opinion. If you decide to paint, I would use Krylon rather than Tremclad. Not that I haven't used Tremclad for the odd gun part, but generally speaking, you are looking for something that will resist wear, not something that will resist heat. Krylon seems to have pretty good "stick-to it-iveness", and usually doesn't require a primer. Anyway, the nice thing about using paint is that if/when it starts to wear, you just give it another blast with the spray can.

Thanks Icedog, just need a lil confidence boost before I do this. =D

Im also wondering if there's anyone in the GTA who can do hot blueing for me? I'll clenem up, just some place to dip them.
