In the first Tremors movie, Reba throws brass into a tumbler that appears to be filled with sand, I was wondering if you could use sand in a tumbler? theoretically would it not clean and polish better then Acorn and corn cob? or is it too hard on the brass.

I'm pretty sure it was Corn cob media in the movie Tremors.... From about 5' they look pretty simular.

I bought some 1xf brass from a board sponsor once..... I just dumped it in the tumbler once it got here as it was really dirty. Turns out there was a bunch of small stones and fine sand in the brass that came out while tumbling.

It drove me CRAZY trying to figgure out why my brass was coming out dull and not shiney!

After I figgured out the problem it was just a matter of washing the brass and changing the media.

I love those movies. I bought the Tremors "Attack Pack" with all 4 in the series. A benchmark in firearms entertainment. Burt Gummer is the man. Happily, Michael Gross was able to make us forget all about his "Family Ties" work.

It would have been corn cob media. What always bothered me is that she just fired the big Dillon tumbler on without tightening the lid on. I tried that with my CV-500 to see how much noise that would make. Pretty deafening. No way would that have been left like that if you were to stand there. They would have had to do some ADR looping for that scene.

That said, yes Tremors is a high water mark in shooting ####. My Attack Pack gets a regular watching. Burt/Hiram Gummer is oft quoted. "I feel I was DENIED critical, need-to-know INformation." or "I feel I have not been privy to critcal, most needful information." My favourite of all 4 movies has to be the 4th.
