My friend and I went out the day after opening on a friend of his property that he has hunted many times. He is the only one with permission. We scouted the night before and saw a flock of at least 30 birds in the field we were going to hunt and half a dozen whitetails. So we get up early the next morning and set up in the dark at the one end of the field we were hunting right along the trail that the birds take to the other side of the field.
We sit, start to softly call just before dawn and we get lots of gobbles back and forth everything is going fine. Then I notice some idiot driving right down the path with his lights on right to where we are sitting. By this time the birds are coming out of the trees only about 100 yards away. My buddy has no idea who it is. Idiot stops his truck gets out slams the door but doesn't come over right away. 10 minutes later he walks right up to where we are sitting in full view of the birds that are about 100 yards away and asks us what we are doing (hes got his shotgun, dressed in camo and a single decoy). I respond we were turkey hunting as the birds head back to the tree line.
He asks us who gave us permission and we tell hime the landowner. He seems confused and questions us as to if we really have permissoin
. We ask him the same questions and he is adament that he has permission as well. Unfortunatly te landowner wasn't home so it wasn't like we could go up to the house to confirm so we let jackass sit down with us (wasn't like we had choice cause he wasn't leaving). Anyway we manage to call the birds back out and they came within 55 yards (the hens) before two coyotes came into the calling and busted the birds (one damn near got one but only managed to get a taste of tail feathers!).
So we decide to leave and come back later and we tell buddy we are going up for a coffee and come back later (my friend has a key to the landowners house). To make a long story short we shot a turkey that afternoon but the idiot had left. That night we found out that the guy who showed up unannounced is a local that has been told in no uncertain terms that he does not have permission to hunt the property.
It is quite evident to me that unless they are caught by the law and charged and convicted of trespassing these idiots will continue to do so as there is really no deterant.
